The success of the Kansas State and Baylor football programs has a lot to do with that. They will square off in Texas this weekend, with postseason implications being profound.
These teams are a combined 19-3 and have risen out of the ashes in recent years to become major players in the Big 12. This is evidenced by both teams’ 7-1 records within the conference.

The 9-2 Wildcats are powered by senior QB Jake Waters and a potent WR duo of Tyler Lockett (79 receptions, 1,193 yards, eight TDs) and Curry Sexton (67/940/5).
In addition to this lethal trifecta, KSU brings excellent defense to the table. The Wildcats rank 17th in the country in points against, yielding only 20.3 per game. In the era of many games – especially in the Big 12 – resembling basketball scores more than shutouts, this is notable.
Kansas State hasn’t run the ball with much success, although sophomore RB Charles Jones does have 12 TDs on the campaign. Offensively and defensively, KSU is a tough customer.

But in steps the home team Bears, a well-oiled machine that has been putting up video game-esque point totals from the moment this season kicked off.
Ever since head coach Art Briles and NFL QB Robert Griffin III came through Waco, Baylor has been cruising on a different trajectory than it had previously.
The Bears are now led by senior QB and Heisman hopeful Bryce Petty, who has been battling a concussion but is expected to play this weekend. Seth Russell has been adequate in Petty’s absence, but it’s the senior that makes this offense click.
Baylor has the sixth-ranked passing game in the FBS and #1 scoring offense in the land (the Bears are averaging a ridiculous nearly 50 points per game). A good KSU defense will have its hands full in Waco on Saturday night.

Briles also rolls out a well-rounded offensive attack; RB Shock Linwood has been a force in 2014. His 222 carries for 1,135 yards and 15 TDs are among the conference leaders at the position.
Basically, the Bears are going to score on you a lot. As an opponent, your offense must be firing at its optimum capacity while your “D” makes a very occasional stop to give your team a fighting chance.
Baylor has been rolling over opponents convincingly this season and, with the raucous home fans behind them, I don’t see this weekend being any different.
The Bears can make a strong case for them deserving a spot in the FBS playoff.
