Between endless talk of ownership changes among its franchises, colossal snowstorms and in-game futility, the Sports Gods seem to hate western New York.

Buffalo winger Tyler Ennis is a talent and let’s hear it for the leading getter of fan-votes for the All-Star Game, Zemgus Girgensons (on name alone!), but it’s a pretty dark time for Sabres fans.

Surely what keeps getting Buffalo fans up in the morning is the Connor McDavid/Jack Eichel sweepstakes – a pair of draft-eligible prospects this year that may rival Crosby/Ovechkin of years past.

At 9-16-2, last in the Atlantic division by a wide margin, the Sabres vie with the Edmonton Oilers for honors of worst team in the league.

All the metrics point to it being a cakewalk for the visiting Kings, but they’re called “trap games” for a reason.

Los Angeles, a team noted for its concept under head coach Darryl Sutter, must maintain its focus for a fairly non-descript midseason Tuesday night game.

Hockey fans in southern California have plenty of more reasons to get festive this time of year. Sitting fourth in the vicious Pacific division and narrowly behind upstart Calgary (who can see that lasting?) the Kings have been successful thanks to incisive goaltending and penalty kill.

Like every recent season, the Kings are built to win in the playoffs. It’s nice for their franchise that the scoring load has been carried over to the youngsters; 22-year olds Tyler Toffoli and Tanner Pearson come to mind.

Ultimately, as long as L.A. has goalie Jonathan Quick and he continues to find his best form in the spring, the Kings will remain a Cup contender.

It’s not an easy fix for the Sabres, and they might not even want it to be with the dazzling prospects on the table in the offseason.

It’s always debatable how much a team actually downright tanks in a season, but suffice it to say that Buffalo will unquestionably be sellers at the trade deadline.
