Handicapping AP Top 25: NCAA Football Top 10 – Week 16 Betting Preview

Week 16 AP Top 25

The Week 16 AP top 25 college football rankings were released on Sunday. Plenty of movement after a week with multiple top matchups spread out across the title games.

Lines courtesy [dfads params=’groups=63740&limit=1&return_javascript=0′].

Auburn was the big winner this week, moving up a spot to No. 2 and earning themselves a spot in the title game against Florida State. Michigan State also moved up from No. 10 to No. 4 and into the Rose Bowl with their big win.

Ohio State’s 24-0 run under head coach Urban Meyer came to an end and at the worst possible time, as the team was dropped from the No. 2 spot in the final week of play before the title game. However, the team did remain in the BCS picture and will get to play in a good bowl game.

Oklahoma State dropped out of the top 10 with a loss to instate rival Oklahoma, and the loss knocked them out of the BCS picture as well.

Let’s take a look at the top 10 teams and take an early look at their chances in their next games.

1. Florida State Seminoles (13-0, previous: 1)

Florida State continued their demolition of all comers, beating up on a good Duke team 45-7 to win the ACC title game. Next up is the national championship game where they’ll be charged with stopping Auburn’s stellar rushing offense. The Seminoles ranked second in the nation in scoring offense and first in scoring defense this season and are installed as 9.5-point favorites in the title game.

2. Auburn Tigers (12-1, previous: 3)

Auburn ran right over Missouri to the tune of an SEC title game record 545 rushing yards in a 59-42 win to claim the SEC title. Some voters were so impressed with the Tigers’ performance that they put Auburn atop their ballots, with the team earning four first place votes.

3. Alabama Crimson Tide (11-1, previous: 4)

Alabama had a week to stew over their loss to Auburn in the Iron Bowl, and moving up a spot in the AP poll will certainly not serve as consolation. The team surely has some frustration to get out and they’ll get a chance to do it in the Sugar Bowl when they take on Oklahoma as 15-point favorites.

4. Michigan State (12-1, previous: 10)

Michigan State’s defense looked as impressive as ever with the exception of a stumble in the middle of their game with Ohio State, but they did enough to come away with a 34-24 win and the Big Ten title. They’ll take on Stanford as 4-point underdogs in the Rose Bowl.

5. Stanford Cardinal (11-2, previous: 7)

Stanford is the highest ranked of the two-loss teams, moving up two spots to No. 5 after winning the Pac-12 title with a 38-14 win over Arizona State. They’ll face off with one of the few defenses that can match their own in the Rose Bowl.
[soliloquy id=”82219″]
6. Baylor Bears (11-1, previous: 9)

Baylor beat Texas to win the Big 12 on Saturday but drew probably the weakest opponent of the BCS field, but Central Florida is better than many give them credit for. The Bears are installed as 16.5-point favorites in the game.

7. Ohio State Buckeyes (12-1, previous: 2)

The Buckeyes couldn’t make it 25 in a row in the Big Ten title game and so they’ll be relegated to the Orange Bowl where they’ll play Clemson, but don’t sleep on a good Tigers team against a Buckeyes squad in for a letdown after tasting a spot in the national title game. Ohio State is a 2.5-point favorite in the game.

8. South Carolina Gamecocks (10-2, previous: 8)

South Carolina quietly had a very impressive season, but two road losses knocked them out of national title contention. They’ll play Wisconsin as 2.5-point underdogs in their bowl game.

9. Missouri Tigers (11-2, previous: 5)

Missouri couldn’t close the deal in the SEC title game and so they’ll be forced to face off with another team that dropped on Championship Weekend, facing Oklahoma State as 1.5-point favorites in their bowl game.

10. Oregon Ducks (10-2, previous: 12)

Oregon had national title aspirations at the start of the year, but a two-loss season put an end to those dreams, and now the Ducks will take on the Texas Longhorns as 13-point favorites.

Handicapping AP Top 25: NCAA Football Top 10 – Week 15 Betting Preview

Week 15 AP Top 25

The Week 15 AP top 25 college football rankings were released on Sunday. A new name atop the rankings for the first time this season as Alabama’s loss to Auburn allowed Florida State to move into the top spot.

Lines courtesy [dfads params=’groups=63740&limit=1&return_javascript=0′].

Alabama fell back to No. 4 with the loss, while Auburn moved up to No. 3, but failed to leapfrog undefeated Ohio State. The Seminoles received 58 of 60 first place votes, with the other two going to third-seeded Auburn, while No. 2 Ohio State did not receive a first place vote.

Michigan State climbed into the top 10 with their eighth consecutive win, with Clemson moving out, falling back to No. 13.

Not many games on the schedule for championship weekend, but many of the top teams will be in action, which could mean some movement in next week’s poll.  Let’s take a look at the top 10 teams and their chances of moving up, or down on Sunday when the next set of rankings are released.

1. Florida State Seminoles (12-0, previous: 2)

Florida State overcame a shaky start in Gainesville to down the Gators, 37-7. In the game, quarterback Jameis Winston broke the team’s single-season passing touchdown record with a three-touchdown day to get to 35 on the year, breaking Chris Weinke’s record of 33 set in 2000. Under his leadership, the Seminoles have racked up the second most points on a per game basis in the FBS with 53.7, while the team also ranks first in the nation in scoring defense, surrendering only 11.0 points per game. The Seminoles are a tough matchup for any program, and should cruise through the ACC title game to the national title game. They get Duke on Saturday as 29-point favorites.

2. Ohio State Buckeyes (12-0, previous: 3)

The Buckeyes had more trouble with the Wolverines than they would have liked in their biggest rivalry game, but squeaked past Michigan late, 42-41. The team hasn’t gotten much respect nationally because of a weak non-conference schedule, but it will be hard to keep them out of the title game if they can get past Michigan State in the Big Ten title game on Saturday. The Buckeyes are installed as 5.5-point favorites in that contest.

3. Auburn Tigers (11-1, previous: 4)

Auburn certainly can’t claim to be short on luck this season. The team has been the benefactor of last minute wins in back-to-back weeks, most recently a win over top-seeded Alabama. They’ll face one more hurdle if they hope to get to the title game, as they have a date with No. 5 Missouri in the SEC championship game. The Tigers will be favored by 1.5 points in Georgia.

4. Alabama Crimson Tide (11-1, previous: 1)

Worse than the loss suffered in Saturday’s Iron Bowl is that the Tide don’t have any games left on their schedule. Falling to Auburn 34-28 was bad enough, but the loss also cost the team a shot at a three-peat. Alabama would need a whole lot of losses in front of them if they hope to get to the title game.

5. Missouri Tigers (11-1, previous: 5)

The Tigers took care of business against the Aggies on Saturday and now find themselves in a pretty favorable spot. With a win over Auburn as 1.5-point underdogs in the SEC championship game on Saturday, the team will have a very strong case to make the trip to Pasadena as a 12-1 SEC team with wins over ranked opponents littered throughout their schedule.
[soliloquy id=”82219″]
6. Oklahoma State Cowboys (10-1, previous: 7)

Oklahoma State was off but still moved up a spot in the latest poll because of Clemson’s loss. The team is well positioned for a BCS bowl berth but will first face a tough Oklahoma team as 10.5-point favorites.

7. Stanford Cardinal (10-2, previous: 8)

The Cardinal got past a good Fighting Irish team on the weekend and now face an even tougher test when they go to Tempe to face a streaking Arizona State team that will be without their top ball carrier, but just put up 58 points on Arizona without him. Stanford is installed as a 3.5-point underdog for the game.

8. South Carolina Gamecocks (10-2, previous: 10)

A couple losses earlier in the year knocked the Gamecocks out of the national title conversation, but they ended their year on a five-game winning streak, putting the exclamation point on their regular season with a beat down on instate rival Clemson, 31-17.

9. Baylor Bears (10-1, previous: 9)

Baylor had more trouble with TCU than they should have on Saturday, but they were able to hold off the Horned Frogs down the stretch. They’ll need a better effort all around on Saturday when they take on Texas as 13.5-point favorites.

10. Michigan State (11-1, previous: 11)

The Spartan defense held five of their final six opponents to six point or fewer as the team won eight games in a row down the stretch and all finished the regular season at 8-0 in Big Ten play, but they’ll face their toughest conference opponent yet in the Big Ten title game on Saturday, taking on the Buckeyes as 5.5-point underdogs.

Handicapping AP Top 25: NCAA Football Top 10 – Week 14 Betting Preview

Week 14 AP Top 25

The Week 14 AP top 25 college football rankings were released on Sunday. Losses for Baylor, Oregon, and Texas A&M threw a wrench in the works, knocking Oregon and A&M out of the top 10, allowing Oklahoma State and South Carolina to move in.

Lines courtesy [dfads params=’groups=63740&limit=1&return_javascript=0′].

Alabama received 56 of 60 first place votes, snagging one away from Florida State after receiving 55 a week ago and for most of the year for that matter.

Some big games on the schedule this week in the final regular season game for most teams, including a major showdown game in the state of Alabama. Let’s take a look at the top 10 teams and their chances of moving up, or down on Sunday when the next set of rankings are released. Odds courtesy BetOnline.

1. Alabama Crimson Tide (11-0, previous: 1)

Alabama’s tune-up game against Chattanooga was a breeze, as the Crimson Tide steamrolled the Mocs, 49-0. On Saturday, the Tide will travel to Jordan-Hare Stadium for the weekend’s marquee matchup between the top-ranked Tide and the fourth-ranked Auburn Tigers. Alabama could be knocked right out of the title game picture with a loss, as Auburn would represent the SEC West in the SEC championship game with a win. Alabama is a 10.5-point favorite in the game.

2. Florida State Seminoles (11-0, previous: 2)

Florida State beat Boston College by 14 points but hasn’t won any of their other games by fewer than 27 points, scoring 41 or better while allowing 17 or fewer points each time. In their last three contests, the Seminoles have outscored opponents 198-20, including an 80-14 drubbing of Idaho last weekend.

On Saturday they get a reeling Florida team in a rivalry game that’s lost some of its luster given Florida’s loss to FCS school Georgia Southern last weekend.

3. Ohio State Buckeyes (11-0, previous: 4)

Ohio State hit a stumbling block in the middle part of their schedule, but they are back in cruise control, beating Indiana 42-14 over the weekend. On Saturday they’ll go to the Big House to take on a disappointing Michigan squad as 14.5-point favorites. The Buckeyes are 23-0 under Urban Meyer.

4. Auburn Tigers (10-1, previous: 6)

Auburn needed their prayer to be answered to sneak past Georgia on a late Hail Mary on Saturday. They’ll need some other-worldly assistance again on Saturday if they hope to get past Alabama in the Iron Bowl.

5. Missouri Tigers (10-1, previous: 8)

The return of James Franklin gave Missouri a boost in a 24-10 win over Ole Miss. The team will need him to provide some extra offense on Saturday when they host an inspired Johnny Manziel in what will likely be his final collegiate game. The Tigers are installed as 4.5-point favorites in the contest.
[soliloquy id=”82219″]
6. Clemson Tigers (10-1, previous: 7)

Clemson didn’t have any trouble with Citadel in a 52-6 thrashing. The team has scored better than 50 points in each of their last three contests, but now go to Columbia to face a tough Gamecocks team as five-point underdogs.

7. Oklahoma State Cowboys (10-1, previous 11)

The Cowboys made an awful lot of noise on Saturday when they ripped apart Baylor, 49-17. They get a week off before another big-time matchup with Oklahoma.

8. Stanford Cardinal (9-2, previous: 10)

Stanford walked all over California on Saturday in a 50-point win, and oddsmakers expect them to continue to roll on Saturday when they host Notre Dame as 14-point favorites.

9. Baylor Bears (9-1, previous: 3)

Baylor’s blown out teams all year prior to last week’s stumble against Oklahoma State. The team is expected to get back to blowing team’s out as they’ll be giving away 13.5 points to TCU on the road on Saturday.

10. South Carolina Gamecocks (9-2, previous: 12)

Outside of a couple pitfalls on the road in the SEC, South Carolina has been everything we expected this season, and will give away five points to a 10-1 Clemson team on Saturday. The Gamecocks have won four in a row in the series, outscoring the Tigers 124-54 in those contests.
