Not much was expected of Michigan this season, but this team busted out fast, winning games against UCLA and Duke in the first month of the campaign. Of course, that’s not the kind of thing that guarantees success in the Big Ten, as Wisconsin was quick to remind them a week ago when they came to Ann Arbor and left with a 73-61 victory.
Duke has had a hot hand lately, shooting 52% against NC-Asheville, 52.5% against Xavier and 54.5% against Loyola. Against Virginia Tech in its last outing, though, the Blue Devils hit less than 41% of their shots. They won the game with defense, holding the Hokies to just 13 points and 33% shooting in the second half.

Western Carolina is the only team in the country that is averaging more than North Carolina’s 95.8 points per game. Thus far the Heels have outscored their opponents by an average margin of almost 27 points a game, and it’s been done for the most part with the team not at full strength.
One of the big positives about Louisville is its ability to get the ball around the floor. The Cardinals are averaging 18.6 assists per game, which currently ranks them eighth in the country among “board teams.” Naturally when you do that you’re going to get yourself in position for a high percentage of good shots, right? Gonzaga doesn’t know what hit them. Certainly it wasn’t the biggest shocker in the world that they lost in Seattle to the U-Conn Huskies, who are loaded. Michigan finds itself building a winner quicker than many thought possible under coach John Beilein, who like Rich Rodriguez came to Ann Arbor from West Virginia and sought to remake the program. Wisconsin will try to upset the applecart with the fundamental style of play it exhibits under Bo Ryan.
Illinois is undergoing a revitalization of its program under Bruce Weber this year, and it’s no wonder, with much-improved guard play. The Illini has tallied almost 20 assists per game, and the ball movement which has been so successful in Weber’s motion offense has resulted in 49% shooting accuracy.

Nonetheless, Xavier has put together a decent resume with wins over Virginia Tech and Memphis. Derrick Brown leads the way with 14.4 points a game, and no less than six members of the Musketeers have pulled down at least four rebounds a game.
