Dale Earnhardt Jr. scored the pole Friday and his 192.761 mile-per-hour qualifying lap set a record for the fastest-ever pole lap in a COT. Atlanta is a 1.54-mile quad oval with 24 degrees of banking in the turns, and NASCAR has been racing here since 1960 for a total of 101 Cup races in the books.

Preview: Atlanta Motor Speedway bills itself as the track “where the fast go faster.” Many NASCAR drivers list it as among their favorites because it is a fast, multi-groove track that gives them options for racing lines. It’s the kind of track that suits Kyle Busch, who won last weekend from the rear of the field in Las Vegas and also won this race last year – the first for Toyota at the Cup level.
