California has captured a winning formula under their first-year coach, Mike Montgomery, who was formerly the head man at Stanford and with the NBA’s Golden State Warriors. The Bears have scored big non-conference wins over UNLV, DePaul, Utah and Nevada, and opened up the Pac-10 season beating both Arizona and Arizona State. They haven’t had to travel yet in the conference schedule, so this will be more of a test than some might expect.
Not much was expected of Michigan this season, but this team busted out fast, winning games against UCLA and Duke in the first month of the campaign. Of course, that’s not the kind of thing that guarantees success in the Big Ten, as Wisconsin was quick to remind them a week ago when they came to Ann Arbor and left with a 73-61 victory.
Duke has had a hot hand lately, shooting 52% against NC-Asheville, 52.5% against Xavier and 54.5% against Loyola. Against Virginia Tech in its last outing, though, the Blue Devils hit less than 41% of their shots. They won the game with defense, holding the Hokies to just 13 points and 33% shooting in the second half.
