Thursday Water Cooler – June 3rd, 2010

Here we go with today’s sports water cooler talk. Here, you won’t just find the straight news; you’ll find the stuff everyone is talking about – the ice breakers, the Twitter Sports Picks and topics…well, basically all the stuff you discuss at the water cooler.

Enjoy!

Even with the Stanley Cup Final and French Open going on and the NBA Finals about to start, Major League Baseball steals the top headlines today for two huge reasons.

MLB news: Blown call costs Galarraga perfect game; Ken Griffey Jr. retires

Ken Griffey Jr. Retires From The Mariners

It’s a shame to list Junior calling it quits as the second piece of news on the baseball docket today, but we can’t deny that everyone in sports, not just the baseball world, is talking about last night’s Indians/Tigers game.

Armando Galarraga got a ground ball with two outs in the ninth inning to seal what should have been the third perfect game in the majors this season, but umpire Jim Joyce called Jason Donald safe at first.

The replay afterward revealed that Donald was out by a step. Joyce was immediately distraught over his decision and is now taking boatloads of flak in the sporting world. Interestingly, Galarraga isn’t the one harping on Joyce.

He took the high road, shrugged off the call and hugged the emotional Joyce after the game.

Stay tuned for a potential call reversal from Bud Selig over the next day or two.

But enough about blown calls. Instead, we should think harder about celebrating one of the greatest players of all time. Ken Griffey Jr. called it quits yesterday and leaves behind a stellar career that thrilled us with highlight-reel catches, moonshot homers and one of the sweetest swings we’ll ever see.

Junior will get special praise when he enters Cooperstown because, thus far, he’s one of the only sluggers of the last two decades not linked to steroids.

Too good to be true? Hard to say – though Griffey’s physique never changed much during his career.

Golf news: Doctor’s office searched in connection to LPGA golfer Blasberg’s death

LPGA golfer Erica Blasberg passed away on May 9 for reasons the Henderson (Nevada) police have still not disclosed. What we do know is that, earlier this week, they searched a Nevada doctor’s house and office as part of an investigation regarding Blasberg’s death.

The police confiscated multiple computers, video cameras, a cell phone and a global positioning system from Dr. Thomas Hess’ home and multiple garbage bags plus a computer from his office.

Their search warrant indicated that they were looking for the anti-anxiety medication Xanax, a particular type of garbage bag and samples of Dr. Hess’ handwriting.

The police aren’t revealing much more information than that – but we do know that a 911 call came from Blasberg’s home before her body was found.

NFL news: Wes Welker returns to practice way ahead of schedule

Considering how often the diminutive Wes Welker defied the odds to become a star NFL receiver, I suppose nothing he does should surprise us anymore.

But it was still pretty amazing to see him return to practice with the New England Patriots just four months after having surgery to repair a torn ACL.

Welker, who set a Patriots record with 123 catches in the 2009 season, impressed his teammates by running and cutting. It now looks like he’ll be ready for the start of the 2010 season.
