MLB Trade Talks Heating Up...

MLB news: Angels acquire Callaspo; Twins hunting Oswalt; five teams after Dan Haren

We’ll start with a deal that actually came to fruition. The Angels know they need extra offense to keep pace with the Texas Rangers – especially since Kendry Morales is still sidelined with his ankle injury. Third base was a particularly big hole; they had a .214 average from that position this year. So the Angels remedied the problem by acquiring the sturdy but unspectacular Alberto Callaspo from Kansas City for pitchers Sean O’Sullivan and Will Smith.

Callaspo is batting .275 with eight homers and 43 RBI in 349 at-bats this year.

We already knew the St. Louis Cardinals were big-time suitors for Roy Oswalt. Reportedly, they’ve offered two current rostered major leaguers for him. But the Minnesota Twins have also joined the hunt. No word yet on what they’re offering.

Dan Haren, not surprisingly, is also drawing interest from a handful of clubs.

Reportedly, the Yankees, Phillies, Twins, Tigers and Cardinals are looking at Dan Haren. He leads the National League with 141 strikeouts and would cost a king’s ransom to acquire.

The saddest news of the day in baseball: Jamie Moyer may be finished. He suffered a serious elbow injury this week and, at 47 years old, will have a very tough time recovering. We may have to wave him goodbye.

NBA news: Stephen Jackson’s home robbed

Armed men broke into Charlotte Bobcats guard Stephen Jackson’s home early Wednesday and made off with a gun and some other expensive items. Jackson wasn’t home – he was in Texas for a basketball camp – but his wife was.

The robbers locked her in a bathroom and stole a handful of things, including a ruby-encrusted watch and a Luis Vuitton wallet.

NFL news: Dumervil signs long-term deal with Broncos; Bryant first first-round pick to sign; LeCharles Bentley sues Browns

It’s a miracle! The Denver Broncos finally kept one of their star players. Elvis Dumervil led the NFL with 17 sacks last season and is behind only DaMarcus Ware and Jared Allen for the league lead since 2006. So it’s no surprise that he cashed in nicely on his long-term deal. The pact he just signed to stay with Denver is for six years and $61 million – at least $41 million of which is guaranteed.

The offseason continues to go smoothly for Dez Bryant and the Dallas Cowboys.

The supposedly volatile rookie receiver, who chose the same agent as Michael Crabtree, shocked everyone yesterday when he became the first of the 2010 first-round draft class to sign. He inked a five-year deal for $11.8 million and $8.3 million or more guaranteed.

LeCharles Bentley is mad at the Cleveland Browns.

Mad enough to sue them. After a brutal knee injury stopped him from every playing a game with the Cleveland Browns, he had surgery and eventually developed a staph infection so severe that it almost killed him and almost left him with an amputated leg.

He’s suing the Browns on the grounds that they claimed their rehab facility was top-notch and sanitary – and that they failed to tell him about multiple other Browns players that contracted staph, including Braylon Edwards and Kellen Winslow Jr.
