Big 12 2010-2011 Football Previews: Colorado Buffaloes

Coach: Dan Hawkins
2009 Record: 3-9

Colorado Gambling Odds from Sportsbook.com to win BCS: +5000

Dan Hawkins was one of the hottest coaching prospects in college football just a few short years ago, but his time with Colorado is going to end very soon if they don’t get things turned around. The team ranked last in every offensive statistic possible in 2009, but they do have some talent on that side of the ball. It is possible that this team could surprise some this year, but don’t expect a miracle.

The running game, which was supposed to be solid a year ago, finished the year ranked 113th in the nation. The offensive line gave up 3.67 sacks per game, which was bad enough to be the fourth worst in all of college football.

Clearly, the offensive line is an area that must improve. Sportsbook.com

Team Strengths:

The defensive secondary of the Buffaloes is solid and they are very deep. The Buffaloes were the fourth best passing defense in the Big 12 in 2009, and I expect they could improve on that in 2010. Jalil Brown and Anthony Perkins are both all over the field, and they’ll be disrupting the opposition’s passing attack all year.

The wide receivers at Colorado are an impressive bunch. Scotty McKnight is the clear leader of the group, and he is a great one. Toney Clemons is a transfer from Michigan that is expected to contribute in a big way, and Markques Simas is also a solid producer.

This group will get open, so it will be up to the quarterback to get them the ball.

Team Weaknesses:

The offensive line is absolutely a glaring weakness for this Colorado team. Most of the guys are back this year, but unless they improve, that might not be a good thing. If they can’t block any better than they did last year then this offense will be stuck in neutral once again.

The linebackers were pretty good last year, but all three of their starters are gone. It will be a completely new group, so they will need to get their act together quickly if Colorado is going to make significant gains.

I don’t really think that Tyler Hansen or Cody Hawkins are bad at the quarterback spot, but the constant controversy over who will be the starter isn’t helpful. The Buffaloes need to settle on one guy, probably Hansen, and give them a much longer leash.

2010-2011 Colorado Football Prediction: 5-7

I do think the Colorado Buffaloes will be an improved team this year. The schedule isn’t a bit easy though, and that will probably keep them from getting to a bowl game. Circle the games at Kansas and home against Iowa State in early November as two key games for this team in their quest to get things turned around.

More than likely this team will need to be bowl eligible for Hawkins to save his job, and while I think it will be close, they’ll fall just short.
