Monday’s Water Cooler – February 1, 2010

Here we go with today’s sports water cooler talk. Here, you won’t just find the straight news; you’ll find the stuff everyone is talking about – the ice breakers, the Twitter topics…well, the stuff you discuss at the water cooler.

Enjoy!

For the first time in a while, the hockey world stole the spotlight over the weekend. Let’s find out why and check in with all the other Monday sports news.

NHL news: Leafs acquire Dion Phaneuf, J.S. Giguere in major roster shakeup

People are calling it a “throwback,” as the modern NHL era hasn’t yielded many midseason blockbuster trades; the Toronto Maple Leafs made a huge move yesterday, acquiring star defenseman Dion Phaneuf from the Calgary Flames in a seven-player deal that sent Niklas Hagman, Matt Stajan, Ian White and Jamal Mayers to Alberta. The big question is: are Leaf fans more excited about Dion Phaneuf coming to town or is it Elisha Cuthbert?

The Leafs weren’t done, also somehow dumping the dead weight of Jason Blake and Vesa Toskala on the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for goalie Jean-Sebastien Giguere. Love him or hate him, we can’t say Brian Burke isn’t trying.

NBA news: Chris Paul to have knee surgery

In the ultra-competitive West, it’s probably time to say goodbye to the New Orleans Hornets’ 2010 playoff hopes. Superstar point guard Chris Paul will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his left knee today for a cartilage tear and is expected to miss one or two months. The injury could be worse; it’s his meniscus and not his ACL or MCL, meaning Paul isn’t expected to miss the rest of the season.

The injury happened on Friday when Paul fell into a photographer on the baseline, though he claimed he had already tweaked the knee earlier that week. Somehow, gargantuan Shaq manages to fall into the crowd once or twice a season without getting hurt. Go figure.Online Sports Betting at Sportsbook

NFL news: Warner officially done; Pro Bowl a “success”

We don’t need to elaborate too much on Kurt Warner’s retirement, as we’ve speculated on it for a few weeks now. But it’s official and Warner leaves football with a Super Bowl victory, a Super Bowl MVP and two league MVPs. Not too shabby.

Was the Pro Bowl, the most maligned All-Star game of the four major North American sports, a success yesterday? The crowd of 70,697 was the largest in 51 years. Matt Schaub took MVP honors after going 13 of 17 for 189 passing yards and two touchdowns. Chad Ochocinco didn’t kick after all.

Rex Ryan should stick to running his mouth instead of, er, talking with his hands. At the MMA event Strikeforce: Miami on Saturday night, presumably there to watch Herschel Walker win, Ryan flipped off the crowd of Dolphin fans. He later apologized and could get a slap on the wrist from Mr. Goodell.

MLB news: Pirates reject Mario Lemieux’s offer to buy them

Yes, that Mario Lemieux. The NHL Hall-of-Famer and Pittsburgh Penguins partial owner apparently made a “substantial and serious” offer to buy – rescue? – the lowly Pirates four months ago. Though Pittsburgh has essentially been baseball’s answer to the L.A. Clippers for the last 15 years or so, ownership insists that the franchise is still “profitable.” Too bad, as everything Mario the Magnificent touches turns to gold.
