Today’s Sports News

NBA news: Brandon Roy “out indefinitely”; Nuggets want five first-rounders for Carmelo Anthony

Nuggets want five first-rounders for Carmelo Anthony

Brandon Roy’s injury-plagued season rages on. Because of his perpetually sore knee, the Portland Trail Blazers announced yesterday that he is “out indefinitely.” Roy also suggested that sitting out the rest of the season is “a possibility.”

Maybe a Carmelo Anthony trade isn’t as close to happening as we thought. Apparently, Denver wants five first-round picks for him. That’s right. An entire starting roster worth of future first-rounders. Predictably, the New Jersey Nets have balked at that asking price.

NFL news: Jets fined $100,000 for tripping incident; Marques Colston has knee surgery

New York Jets assistant coach Sal Alosi wasn’t the only one affected when he tripped a Miami player a few weeks ago after all. He was suspended without pay for the rest of the season but now the NFL slapped the Jets as a whole on the wrist. The league fined them $100,000.

Football players are tough. If I had “clean up” surgery on my knee, I wouldn’t go near a football field for weeks. But Saints wideout Marques Colston still hopes to play this Sunday after having that procedure done this past Tuesday. Colston didn’t practice Thursday, however, so he’s somewhat of a long shot to play against Tampa Bay.

MLB news: Rafael Palmeiro still insists he never used Steroids

You have to give Rafael Palmeiro credit for at least sticking to his story. It must be exhausting. This week, likely hoping to influence the Baseball Writers Association of America’s Hall of Fame inductees (which will be announced next week), Palmeiro insisted once again that he did not take steroids. He still claims that the positive steroid test came from a B-12 vial given to him by Miguel Tejada.

NHL news: Weather to threaten Winter Classic?

Could weather conditions push back the outdoor game between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals tomorrow? Warmer temperatures and even rain are in the Pittsburgh forecast. The slated start time for the Winter Classic is 1:00 p.m. ET but it could be pushed back as late as 8:00 p.m. or, if the league is really desperate, Sunday afternoon. Good luck getting ratings if you do that, NHL.

NCAA football news: LaMichael James staying at Oregon next season

Any NFL teams drooling over NCAA rushing champ LaMichael James will have to wait another year for his services. James will return to Oregon for his junior year. “I came to the University of Oregon to get a quality education as well as to play football and I feel I have yet to complete that goal,” he said in a statement.

James ran for 1,682 yards and scored 22 touchdowns to set a Ducks school record this season.

NCAA women’s basketball news: Stanford ends UConn’s epic winning streak at 90 games

The streak is over. Maybe UConn’s women’s team let its guard down after they bested the 1971-74 UCLA men’s team’s 88-game streak last week? For whatever reason, Stanford became the first team to get the better of Connecticut in 90 games last night. The Cardinal took down the Huskies 71-59, extending their own home winning streak to 50-plus games.
