NCAA basketball news: Mississippi State teammates fight in stands

Teammates fight in the stands?

It wasn’t the Malice at the Palace; this time, players fought their own teammates. In Mississippi State’s 69-52 win over San Diego last night, teammates Renardo Sidney and Elgin Bailey got into a fight before tipoff. They threw punches and brawled for several minutes before being separated by teammates. Sidney was escorted away by police but no arrests were made.

NCAA football news: Terrell Pryor suspended five games in 2011; four Georgia Tech player ineligible for bowls

Terrelle Pryor, Ohio State’s star quarterback, got a heavy slap on the wrist yesterday for his involvement in the Buckeyes’ tattoo scandal. He four teammates were suspended for the first five games of the 2011 season for selling championship rings, jerseys and awards in exchange for improper benefits from a tattoo parlour and its owner. They won’t miss the Sugar Bowl against Arkansas on January 4.

Four Georgia Tech players have been deemed ineligible for the Independence Bowl, including leading receiver Stephen Hill and starting safety Mario Edwards. They and two other Yellow Jackets failed to meet their academic requirements.

NFL news: 49ers switch back to Troy Smith; Donovan McNabb’s agent feuds with Shanahans

Alex, then Troy, then Alex, now Troy again. The 49ers can’t decide which Smith is their starting quarterback. For this weekend’s crucial NFC West battle with the St. Louis Rams, Mike Singletary is going with Troy Smith. San Francisco is 3-2 with Troy starting this year. He threw for a career-high 356 yards against the Rams earlier this season.

The feud between Donovan McNabb’s camp and the Shanahans in Washington rages on. The latest development: McNabb’s agent suggested that Redskins offensive co-ordinator Kyle Shanahan refused to listen to McNabb’s suggestions based on “the intricacies Donovan has learned in his NFL career.” He also said Kyle used McNabb’s ideas – such as throwing more screen passes to burn blitzers – only after McNabb was benched.

MLB news: Astros trade Matt Lindstrom to Rockies

The Colorado Rockies strengthened their bullpen yesterday, acquiring hard-throwing Matt Lindstrom from the Houston Astros for minor-league pitchers Wes Musick and Jonnathan Aristil. Lindstrom had 23 saves and a 4.39 ERA for Houston last year.

NBA news: Bobcats, Clippers pondering a Baron Davis trade

Michael Jordan isn’t wasting any time changing up the Charlotte Bobcats this week. Coach Larry Brown is out, Paul Silas is in and, now, the Bobcats are looking at bringing in one of Silas’ old disciples. Baron Davis played under him in the past and could arrive in Charlotte in exchange for D.J. Augustin, DeSagana Diop and Matt Carroll. That’s the rumored deal on the table.
