NBA news: Vujacic, Williams, Smith on the move in three-team deal

Nets, Lakers & Rockets Let's Make A Deal!

The New Jersey Nets, Los Angeles Lakers and Houston Rockets have agreed in principle on a three-team trade. The Nets will receive guard Sasha Vujacic from the Lakers; they also get a 2011 first-round pick from L.A. and a 2012 first-rounder from the Rockets. The Lakers get Joe Smith, whose salary is more than $4 million cheaper than Vujacic’s, from the Nets in an effort to create luxury-tax savings. Houston, meanwhile, receives Terrence Williams from the Nets. Williams, who recently made headlines when the Nets banished him to the Developmental League, was the 11th pick in the 2009 draft and is averaging 6.7 points this season.

By adding two more first-round picks to their cupboard, the Nets are strengthening their position to trade for Carmelo Anthony. Still, Melo openly still prefers the New York Knicks at this time. He said he will sign a contract extension if they acquire him. That said – does a Knicks team with eight straight wins want to fix what ain’t broke?

NFL news: Eagles sign Derrick Burgess; Miami signs Kevin Curtis; life imprisonment for Perrish Cox?

Trying to patch up a banged-up defense and replace injured rookie Brandon Graham, the Philadelphia Eagles have turned to two-time Pro Bowler Derrick Burgess. The 32-year-old led the NFL with 16 sacks in 2005 and has 52 for his career.

The Miami Dolphins placed tackle Vernon Carey on injured reserve yesterday, ending his consecutive starts streak at 87 games and shutting down his season. They also made a signing yesterday, grabbing Kevin Curtis. The former Eagle and Ram receiver will replace Brian Hartline, whose season ended with a finger injury last week.

Could Broncos rookie cornerback Perrish Cox go to jail for life? His sexual assault charges were filed by prosecutors last week. If he’s convicted, he could face between two years and life in prison. At the very least, he’s likely to get a four-game suspension from the NFL for violating its personal conduct code (as Ben Roethlisberger did to start the 2010 season).

MLB news: Hideki Matsui signs with Athletics; Pirates sign Lyle Overbay, Matt Diaz

Hideki Matsui has his third big-league team – and his second straight in the American League West. After playing a year with the Los Angeles, Godzilla is now an Oakland Athletic. He signed a one-year, $4.25-milllion deal yesterday with $100,000 in bonuses. Now 36 years old, hit .274 with 21 homers and 84 RBI last season. He won the World Series MVP during his last season with the New York Yankees in 2009.

The Pittsburgh Pirates reeled in some veteran help this week. They snagged free-agent first baseman Lyle Overbay, formerly of the Blue Jays, for one year and $5 million. He batted only .243 last year with 67 RBI but did have 20 homers. They also signed Matt Diaz, a 32-year-old who played an effective platoon role with the Braves over the last few seasons.

NHL news: Sidney Crosby, Alex Ovechkin appearing on “The Price Is Right”
