Ryder Cup Preview

The 2008 edition of the Ryder Cup (The 37th Ryder Cup to be exact) starts on Sept. 19, we preview the two teams taking part, and their betting odds.

Getting Closer to Ryder Cup Wagering

The 37th Ryder Cup starts on Sept. 19 and finishes up on Sept. 21st. That makes it roughly two weeks away. For online golf betting fans, The Ryder Cup has become something of an important yearly event. The reason is simple – – the Americans are always underdogs and, therefore, deserve to be considered for an online wager to win the event.

Of course, the Americans hardly ever do win this event. And, with their best player on the sidelines, that would be one Tiger Woods, it appears that the Europeans might have the victory securely tucked away in their golf bags once again. But I’m not inclined to jump all over the Europeans just yet. The Americans might have enough on this team to bring home the Ryder Cup.

Let’s take a look at each team based on the current BetUS online sportsbook betting odds.

United States Team – – online betting odds + 105

The top player on the U.S. squad is no doubt Phil “Lefty” Mickelson. With the pressure off of him as a single player, I expect Phil to play about as well as the paunchy, striker can. He should do well. But Phil’s not the only reason to like this team. Anthony Kim and Jim Furyk, even though Furyk hasn’t won a tournament this year, have been ultra consistent finishing in the Top Ten almost every time they step onto a golf course.

Kenny Perry was hot earlier this year. He’s tailed off some, but I do believe that he could turn his form around in this tournament. Justin Leonard and Stewart Cink could have big days and Ben Curtis has the ability to dominate but will need to keep his head in the game in order to do it.

There’s a lot to like about this United States’ team.

European Team – – online betting odds – 135

Yeah, this team is freaking loaded. Online betting fans have to love the looks of the European squad with names like Sergio Garcia and Padraig Harrington on the roster. Sergio is golfing about as well as anybody in the world right now.

Padraig won two of the four majors this year. Lee Westwood is an old pro who usually comes through in the clutch. Robert Kaarlson has been playing well. This is a dynamite team. But the reason that they are really favored is because of Sergio and Padraig. If either one of those two falters, then the Americans could have a legitimate shot to win this.

The Pick – – Right Now

The online betting odds on the Americans offer some value. The online betting odds on the Europeans offer no value. Because of that, I have to go with the United States Team – – for now.

The chances of Sergio Garcia and Padraig Harrington not playing well aren’t that great, but the chances that Kenny Perry, Anthony Kim and Jim Furyk step it up are pretty good. I think the Americans have a legitimate shot to win. If they do, then making an online bet on them at the better online wagering odds is the way to go.
