Tuesday afternoon marks the beginning of the biggest Hockey tournament in the world with the United States facing off against Switzerland at Noon Local Time. The United States comes into the 2010 Olympic Games on the heels of a disappointing eighth place finish in Torino with a team that could legitimately challenge for a medal.

Switzerland, on the other hand will be happy to keep their Round Robin games close.

The United States is one of only two teams in the Olympic tournament comprised only of NHL players –  Canada being the other. The USA forwards are a young and talented bunch, boasting the likes of Patrick Kane, Phil Kessel and Zack Parise. The Defense is young and talented with the two Johnsons (Erik and Jack), but without a doubt, the team’s strength is in Goal.

Ryan Miller is at or near the top of every NHL goaltending category this year and could be the key to a long run for Team USA at this year’s Olympics.

Hard Core Hockey fans remember what Dominik Hasek was able to accomplish in Nagano in 1998. He singlehandedly eliminated the favored Canadian team and carried the Czech Republic to a Gold Medal.

The United States will use this game as a tune-up, but could be caught looking forward to Friday night’s clash with arch rivals Canada. They are a solid bunch and should roll over Team Switzerland.

Team Switzerland has two NHL’ers on its roster, the same amount as it did in the 2006 Torino games. In that year, the Swiss were expected to be doormats for their competition, but instead played tough. They rode their hot goaltending to a sixth place finish – ahead of Canada and the United States.

The Swiss will start Anaheim Ducks goaltender Jonas Hiller in net in the hopes of slowing down the American team.

Team Switzerland was the Cinderella Story of the 2006 Games and with Hiller between the pipes; they might have a shot at legitimacy once again.

In Tuesday’s game against the Americans however, they should be beaten soundly.
