Sportsbook odds: Stars +155, Flyers -175
Here they come. We can’t get overly excited about the Flyers’ improved play, as home wins over the Leafs and Lightning aren’t worth a lot, but they also weaved a decisive win at Pittsburgh into that three-game winning streak. Reportedly, Peter Laviolette has improved the team’s conditioning and Philly is finally reaping the rewards. It has too much talent not to.
A closer look shows signs of sustained success for Philly. Not only are the Flyers 7-1-1 in their last nine, they’ve operated at 85.1 per cent on the penalty kill under Laviolette compared to 72.2 per cent under Stevens. They’ve also scored seven power-play goals in their last four games and are getting regular production from two scoring lines (Richards/Gagne/Giroux; Carter/Hartnell/Briere).
The Stars are a pesky enough team and Brad Richards continues to play outstanding hockey but they’ve lost four of five to start 2010 and seven straight road games. This team isn’t mentally tough enough to handle a hot team in hostile environment.
