Can anyone stop Jacques Lemaire’s Devils? They have all the defensive prowess they had under his original coaching tenure and Marty Brodeur—but adding Zach Parise’s offensive prowess makes them all the more dangerous. Allowing the league’s fewest goals so far comes as no surprise – but having the league’s No. 6 power play might.
The Devils are 15-4-1 on the road and thus pose a major threat at Madison Square Garden tonight. But is there a chance for a minor upset (though the sportsbooks wouldn’t call it that tonight)? The Devils are 3-1 in 2010 but haven’t faced an elite opponent yet (Montreal, Dallas, Tampa Bay, Minnesota).
Meanwhile, the Rangers have just one regulation loss in their last 12 games. Their secondary scorers like Ryan Callahan are finally chipping in and King Henrik Lundqvist’s consistently sound second-half goaltending has arrived right on schedule.
Also worth noting: Marty Brodeur’s career numbers sparkle against the Rangers (40-22-15) but haven’t been nearly as good in the last few seasons, when he’s gone 2-7-3 against them. There’s also the Sean Avery factor. The superpest has zero goals in 17 career games against New Jersey but his ability to get in Brodeur’s head is well-documented.
I like the Rangers tonight. They’re the hotter group and the Devils are due to get jolted awake by a good team.
