The Flyers hoped to make their Eastern Conference semifinal matchup with Boston interesting in Game 3 but it was over almost as soon as it started. The Bruins scored two goals in the first 63 seconds, marking the fastest two goals to start a playoff game in franchise history, and Boston was off and running.

The 5-1 victory was never in doubt. Big Zdeno Chara blasted two goals past Brian Boucher and Bruins netminder Tim Thomas continued to baffle the Flyers, stopping 37 of 38 shots.

The Flyers find themselves in a very familiar position entering Game 4 in Boston on Friday night. Last season, they fell behind 3-0 to the Bruins before rallying to win four straight games. So they know anything is possible.

However, just as we saw with the Washington Capitals, who just bowed out to Tampa in four games, something is seriously wrong with the Flyers. It’s almost like they’ve mentally checked out. When does a gamebreaker like captain Mike Richards ever go invisible in a playoff series? He has in this case. The Flyers also continue to suffer both defensively against the Bruins’ big forwards and during their own power plays with Chris Pronger still out nursing a hand injury. It’s too early to tell if he’ll suit up for Game 4.

We can talk about the Flyer forwards and Pronger all we want but we know what the Flyers’ real problem is, just as it always is: goaltending. They still haven’t found a reliable puckstopper since Bernie Parent’s heyday (or perhaps Ron Hextall’s). Brian Boucher got the hook in Game 3 after allowing four goals on 20 shots. He was replaced by Sergei Bobrovsky, who opened the playoffs as Philly’s starting goaltender before he got the hook, too.

The pick:

This Flyer team doesn’t look like the same group that triumphed over Boston last year. No one seems interested in stopping the puck and it’s open season on the mentally shaky Flyer goaltenders with Pronger not around. The Bruins are over the hump, with Chara and Thomas playing great and their two-way centers, Patrice Bergeron and David Krejci, coming up with big plays almost every game.

Time for Boston to bust out the broom and book its date with Tampa Bay.

Flyers vs Bruins prediction: Bruins 4, Flyers 2
