Both teams have played .500 hockey the last two weeks and will be looking to gain some momentum for the stretch drive. San Jose has had Montreal’s number the last few years – the Sharks have shut the Habs out three straight times including 4-0 on March 2.

The San Jose Sharks have some work to do – they currently sit five points behind Calgary for the final Western Conference playoff spot. The Sharks are in serious danger of missing the playoffs for the first time in 10 years and should be a desperate team Saturday night. They are coming off a 4-1 win over Toronto – but who hasn’t beaten Toronto lately.

There are some struggling Sharks heading into Saturday night’s game – Patrick Marleau hasn’t recorded a point in six games and Marc-Edouard Vlasic has just one point in his last six games. Joe Pavelski continues to lead the way offensively – he has 34 goals on the year (fifth in the NHL) and has three points in his last two games. Brent Burns and Melkar Karlsson each have three points in three games – they are the hottest of the Sharks heading into Montreal.

Antti Niemi figures to get the start between the pipes Saturday – he has shut out the Habs in the last two matchups. But Niemi was pulled two starts back in the first period for yielding three goals on eight shots in a 5-2 loss at Winnipeg and surrendered one goal against the pathetic Leafs.

Niemi is 1-2-0 with a 4.15 GAA and .862 save percentage in his last three starts overall – not great.

The Montreal Canadiens will be looking to maintain top spot in the Eastern Conference on Saturday night. They are just 5-5-0 in their last 10 games overall. They have won three of their last four games however and have outscored their opposition 12-7 over that span.

When the Montreal Canadiens are going well, Carey Price is the difference maker – that hasn’t been happening against the San Jose Sharks. Price is just 1-4-1 with a 3.15 GAA in his career against the San Jose but has been sensational versus the rest of the league this year. Price has a league-leading 39 wins, has a NHL-best 1.89 GAA and has eight shutouts this year. You absolutely have to think that Price will be motivated to snap his personal skid against one of his kryptonite teams.

The Habs have averaged three goals per game in their last four and scored four last time out. They have been getting some secondary scoring which is a good sign going forward. Fourth-liner Dale Weise had a goal and an assist Thursday and has three points in his last two games, Brandon Prust has three points in two games and Jacob de la Rose has two points in his last two games.

[dfads params=’groups=64161&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]

Of course Max Pacioretty has been terrific – he has five points in his last five games and now sits fourth in the NHL with 35 goals on the season.

NHL Gambling Trends

• SJ are 2-6 in their last 8 games following a win.
• Under is 36-15-6 in SJ last 57 Sat. games.
• Under is 37-18-12 in MON last 67 overall.
• MON are 35-17 in their last 52 Sat. games.
• Home team is 10-1 in the last 11 meetings.
• Under is 7-1-1 in the last 9 meetings in Montreal.

The San Jose Sharks have certainly had the Canadiens number the last couple of years – Montreal obviously doesn’t match up well with the size of the Sharks.

While I like Montreal’s game, expect a desperate Sharks to overwhelm the Habs again.

San Jose Sharks +138

There are certain teams that the Habs have trouble with – Tampa and Buffalo have proven that they have a formula for defeating Montreal. San Jose holds that recipe too.
