The Central Division is a log jam at the top once again this year, but this time around the Avalanche are not involved and the Predators are. Nashville can retake the division lead with a win tonight, while the Avs would like a chance to at least play spoiler as their playoff hopes have long since passed.

Predators

It’s been a remarkable turnaround season for Nashville and you wouldn’t be far off in drawing comparisons with them to the Avalanche of last season.

The Central Division exemplifies the parity in the NHL better than any other division as the Predators could end up as the division champs like Colorado did a year ago in a division that includes St. Louis and Chicago.

The Preds looked to be in firm control of the division about a month ago but have since slipped a bit, while the Blackhawks and Blues have put their games into high gear.

Pekka Rinne shouldn’t be faulted for the Predators’ most recent struggles based solely on the fact that his play for much of the season is why the Predators are in the position they are. However, Rinne has not been that guy from mid-season in quite some time and has surrendered 15 goals in his last five games.

Nashville comes in having dropped two straight games in overtime and while getting a few points in losses isn’t terrible, this team needs wins in their last few games if they want to win the division and avoid either Chicago or St. Louis in the first round.

Avalanche

Most people were probably predicting that this team would take a step back this year after an incredible 2013-14 campaign that saw them win the Central.

Goalie Semyon Varlamov’s game was due to have a bit of regression and first overall pick Nathan MacKinnon can’t be blamed for hitting the dreaded sophomore slump. Those factors can both be accounted for before the season starts, but losing players like P.A. Parenteau and Paul Stastny have really hurt this team as they’ve lost a lot of speed and skill up front.

Jarome Iginla has had a nice season and it’s him and fellow veteran Alex Tanguay that have led the way on the score sheet this year for the Avs, who most would think of as a young team.

This season is a write off, but look out for this team again next year when the young guys like Duchene and MacKinnon return to top tier form.

Predators vs. Avalanche  4* Free Pick

Normally this one looks like a trap game for the Preds who have already clinched a playoff berth, but they have a lot to play for tonight as the division title hangs in the balance. The Predators have also dropped two straight and are going to be desperate to find their game before the playoffs start.

Colorado will give Nashville all they can handle tonight and this game should be close and perhaps a third straight OT game for Nashville. The Predators lead the season series 3-1 but have only managed three goals in their two visits to the Pepsi Center so don’t expect a barrage of goals tonight.

The Predators grind out a close one tonight, go with Nashville.
