The Leafs have lost both games on their current road trip and have failed to score a goal in either game. The Leafs may have caught the Sharks are just the right time however – San Jose is just 4-5-1 in their last 10 games overall and haven’t looked great at the Shark Tank lately.

Where has the offense gone for Toronto? After being near the top of the league in that department for the bulk of the season, the Leafs have struggled mightily lately since their “renewed focus” on defense.

[dfads params=’groups=64160&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]

They’ve been outscored 14-2 during a four-game road skid and are coming off a 4-0 loss at Anaheim last night.

The Leafs have lost five of their last six games overall – they are 1-3 under Interim Coach Peter Horachek. Obviously nobody is Hot offensively for Toronto – Dion Phaneuf is pointless in four games, David Clarkson, Jake Gardiner and Morgan Reilly haven’t recorded a point in eight games and David Booth has been held off the score sheet in 13 games!

After Jonathan Bernier started both games on the trip so far and played OK, expect to see James Reimer between the pipes Thursday – not a great sign for the Leafs. Reimer is 1-3-0 in his last four starts with a 2.81 GAA and unflattering .875 save percentage but has a 4.30 GAA in his last four road starts.

The San Jose Sharks are a much better team than they have been showing – they have already matched their losses on home ice from all of last season! The team is coming off a 3-2 win at Arizona Tuesday in a game that they looked typically average. They have scored a total of four goals during their current three game home slide.

The Sharks are averaging 2.66 goals per game this season – nearly a half a goal less than the Leafs. Joe Pavelski has five goals and three assists over his last seven games to lead the way for the Sharks offensively while Brent Burns has six points in seven games and Melkar Karlsson has five points in six. But there are some struggling Sharks as well – Tommy Wingels is pointless in three games and Matt Irwin and Patrick Marleau haven’t hit the score sheet in four.

Antti Niemi will likely get the start in goal Thursday – he won in Arizona to end a 1-3-0 stretch in which he posted a 4.56 GAA.

[dfads params=’groups=64161&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]

Niemi has enjoyed his time against he Leafs lately – he has a 1.67 GAA in his last three starts against Toronto.

NHL Gambling Trends

• Under is 7-3 in TOR last 10 road games.
• TOR are 16-37 in their last 53 road games.
• Under is 8-1-2 in SJ last 11 vs. Eastern Conference.
• SJ are 2-6 in their last 8 vs. Atlantic.
• SJ are 56-25 in their last 81 home games.
• TOR are 1-7 in the last 8 meetings.

Everything is pointing toward a Sharks win Thursday night but part of me can’t help but think that the Leafs are due for a huge breakout. Despite an ugly recent record the Leafs have been doing some good things – expect them to finally be paid off for that work Thursday.
