Bruins vs. Maple Leafs Pick

After a forlorn start to the season that only served to further alienate a jaded fan base, the Maple Leafs have been getting their act together over the last couple of weeks. They’ve done it with a youth movement, but Boston has always been the garlic to Toronto’s vampires.

Toronto has been getting good production both from their marquee scorer (Phil Kessel) and the unsung youthful role players on the roster (Peter Holland, Josh Leivo, Richard Panik). But every since the Leafs coughed up a 4-1 lead in that fateful playoff series a couple of years ago, Boston has been the supreme overlord of Toronto shame.

The Bruins have been predictably solid to start the year, with ten wins and 20 points through 16 games. Glue guys like Patrice Bergeron, Carl Soderberg and David Krejci have lived up to their billing in the early season.

Perhaps a silver lining for the home team is that Krejci will miss the game with an undisclosed injury.

For the headline-grabbing deal to pry Kessel from Boston several years ago, Toronto coughed up a pick that became blueliner Dougie Hamilton (the pick that was Tyler Seguin was also in the deal; Seguin is an elite talent that is now – thankfully – showcasing his talents in Dallas and not Beantown) and Hamilton is really rounding into a fantastic player.

The Bruins have just often been the Leafs’ kryptonite, and Toronto doesn’t need any additional help shooting itself in the foot.

However, the Leafs have looked promising of late. The whipped fanbase is perhaps slow to get excited – and the Leafs have played lousy at home this season for the most part – but Toronto has weathered inconsistent goaltending from Jonathan Bernier and James Reimer by having solid team chemistry.

This could really be a lighthouse performance for the home side. The watchful eyes are always a little more alert when the Bruins are involved and a strong performance on Wednesday night would exorcise the home-game jitters at the ACC.

But if the Bruins come into the building and have their way with Toronto, it will only further the narrative that the Leafs entirely lose their composure when they play the B’s.

Bruins head coach Claude Julien and GM Pete Chiarelli seem to revel in it, and why wouldn’t you? Boston is clearly a contender in the Eastern Conference in 2014.

Conversely, the Leafs don’t really know what they are. Still, a win on Wednesday night against a hated rival and recent strong form could possibly be changing people’s minds.

4* NHL Play Toronto 4, Boston 2

Solely because I believe in the adage of “the wolf climbing the hill is hungrier than the wolf on top”, I’ll take the Leafs in this one.
