It’s been a bit of a shocking development in the Central Division this year that neither of these two teams finds themselves in the playoff picture at the 50 game mark. The Avs won the Central last year and Dallas re-t00led big time in the offseason with some key additions.
The Stars and Avs find themselves in a deadlock at 53 points going into this game and every game is huge from this point on as the wild card looks like the ceiling for both.
Avalanche
You’ve got to hand it to this team for making a nice turnaround. The Avalanche had a miserable start to the season and looked like their 2013-14 campaign was just a fluke. It’s still hard to argue that winning the Central wasn’t a bit lucky, but this team has shown its resilience and bounced back to a respectable record and are just four points out of a wild card spot right now.
This team was predicated on its youth and offensive flair last year and used great team speed to catch teams off guard and hit them with wave after wave of fast breaks. Semyon Varlamov was incredible last season and his slight dip in play has something to do with the team’s regression this year.

The young kids have been shown up so far this year by the old guard as veterans Alex Tanguay and Jarome Iginla are leading the way offensively. This team has a big challenge in front of them with the loss of Erik Johnson on the blue line who was having a career season with 12 goals and 23 points. Johnson and Tyson Barrie had formed one of the better young blue line duos in the league but Johnson will be out for the next three to eight weeks with a knee injury.
Stars
The Dallas Stars have a great base of talent in place and if they could just find a few players to bolster their blue line this team would be scary for anyone.
With the likes of Jamie Benn, Tyler Seguin, Jason Spezza, Ales Hemsky up front and rookie standout John Klingberg (January’s rookie of the month) and Trevor Daley chipping in on the back end this team can put up goals with relative ease. The Stars’ issue is finding ways to keep the puck out of their own net as is evidenced by their 159 goals against (18 more than the Avs have surrendered in one less game played).
The Stars have come out of the All Star break firing on all cylinders with two wins in three games, while scoring 11 goals in their current two game winning streak.
Avalanche vs. Stars 4* Free Pick
These divisional games are always interesting and these teams both boast a good deal of weapons on offense that should ensure that this is an uptempo game. The Avalanche held serve at home in the first two games of the season series, winning both games by scores of 5-2 and 4-3. Dallas will look to get some revenge on home ice and I like their chances to win this one with the way they’ve been playing coming out of the break. Go with Dallas to win a high scoring and fun game to watch.
