Week 2 NFL Picks – New Orleans Saints vs. Philadelphia Eagles
The New Orleans Saints made sure they caught everyone’s attention by decimating the Lions 45-27 in Week 1 betting. Drew Brees was the headline grabber of the weekend, throwing for 358-yards and 6 touchdowns. The game against Detroit was a nice tune-up, but now we get to really see what the Saints can do on the road against a vaunted Eagles’ defense that caused five turnovers last weekend against Carolina.

The oddsmakers have essentially made this game a pick ‘em because the Saints are just 1-7 ATS in their last 8 games against Philadelphia. But a lot of the angling on this game will be on which quarterback will play. Kevin Kolb is the listed starter, while Jeff Garcia has been signed on to be a backup (for now). However, McNabb is insisting he can be ready by Sunday to play despite fracturing his rib on a useless rushing touchdown against the Panthers last weekend. With a fully healthy McNabb, the Saints were in real trouble. With an injured McNabb, the Eagles’ offense becomes one-dimensional and that makes this a lot easier for the Saints.
The Saints are not without their injury concerns. While Will Smith and Charles Grant were acquitted of any wrong doing and will be able to play after all and Pierre Thomas has returned to practice after injuring his knee in preseason. Thomas is a big part of this offense, as Reggie Bush gets used more at receiver. The Saints need to use Thomas to lure the Eagles’ linebackers closer to the trenches, allowing Brees to use Marques Colston and Lance Moore more effectively.
As of right now, the Saints are the pick for the Furious One. What’s more important to the Eagles? Getting McNabb out on the field and subjugating him to Charles Grant and Will Smith, potentially furthering his injury, or seeing if the combo of Kolb/Garcia can survive them through this injury?
It’s going to be a long day for Brian Westbrook and the Eagles, whose Super Bowl dreams are in doubt with McNabb on the shelf and a team becoming one-dimensional with only a rushing attack against one of the most formidable offenses in the NFL. The Saints will push the score early, forcing Philadelphia to throw, and that means this improved secondary gets to capitalize on Kolb.
