The New Orleans Saints will look to take one step closer to getting to the elusive .500 mark in Week 8 but they will have their hands full. Waiting for the Saints is a confident Denver Broncos team that is coming off a bye and had looked good prior to their week off.

For New Orleans, their goal has to be to get their Swiss Cheese defense to rise to the occasion – good luck with all of that!

The New Orleans Saints continue to be the least balanced team in the NFL. If not for Drew Brees this team wouldn’t be close to competitive. That said, Brees and the Saints #1 ranked passing game has done its job – New Orleans’ two wins are all thanks to the aerial assault.

New Orleans simply can’t run the ball. They are dead last in the NFL averaging 76 yards per game. Hence the one dimensional tag I previously gave them. Not fearing the run should allow Champ Bailey and the Broncos 10th ranked pass defense to devise a way to disrupt the Saints’ only way to succeed – the extra week off for the Broncos won’t help New Orleans either!

The Saints rushing offense has been putrid this season but so has the defense. They are 30th against the pass allowing 305 yards per game, they are 31st against the run allowing 160 yards per game and they allow 30.33 points per game – good for 29th in the NFL. The Saints are coming off a game in which they allowed Josh Freeman and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 420 yards through the air – brutal!

The Denver Broncos are coming around – the Peyton Manning effect is in full swing. Denver possesses an offense light years ahead of where most could have predicted with the addition of Mr. Manning. They are 4th in passing yards and they are 7th in points scored. Willis McGahee has been solid in the run game but the rushers have the team ranked a surprisingly low 23rd in the NFL. All told, the Broncos have a solid offense with weapons all over the field. They can beat you in a multitude of ways unlike years past.

As mentioned, Denver’s defense is formidable – 10th against the pass and 18th versus the run. All they have to do is stop Drew Brees a few times in the game and let the offense rack up the points.

Betting Prediction

  •  The total has gone OVER in 5 of New Orleans’s last 5 games on the road
  •  The total has gone OVER in 10 of New Orleans’s last 11 games
  •  The total has gone OVER in 5 of New Orleans’s last 6 games when playing Denver
  •  New Orleans is 16-7 SU in its last 23 games
  •  The total has gone OVER in 5 of Denver’s last 6 games when playing New Orleans
  •  The total has gone OVER in 6 of Denver’s last 8 games
  •  The total has gone OVER in 16 of Denver’s last 22 games at home
  •  Denver is 4-2 SU in its last 6 games when playing New Orleans

The New Orleans Saints have stopped absolutely nobody on defense this year and Sunday night should be no different. Drew Brees will keep the Saints in the game for a while but he will not be able to do it all. After a bye, in front of their home fans on national TV, look for a Broncos blowout. The New Orleans defense is absolutely miserable folks – we will all see it for ourselves on Sunday night.

Pick: Denver Broncos -6
