The Panthers have proven a lot so far this season but a win on Sunday would prove that much more. Is this young team up to the challenge?

New Orleans

New Orleans looked absolutely awful last week against St. Louis. It was a surprising result because they had looked so good the week before in beating Carolina…and the fact that the game was indoors, where the Saints offense normally thrives, like they do at home.

This team is clearly two different teams, home and away, and the playing conditions are only part of it. This has applied to wagering too as the Saints are a fantastic 6-1 ATS at home and an awful 1-6 ATS on the road – pretty stark.

However, I think this game is going to buck that trend, primarily because QB Drew Brees rarely has two bad games in a row and I think the Saints have a huge edge in coaching and experience in terms of preparing for these kind of games over Carolina.

That will count just enough for them to get the road upset victory.

Carolina

Regardless of the outcome of this game, or their season, Carolina has done a lot to change the perception of this team this season and for the future. QB Cam Newton still leaves you wanting more some times but that defense has been superb almost every week, giving him, and them, the chance to win it with a couple of hero plays per game.

Speaking of heroes, what happened to mighty mouse WR Steve Smith? Last year he was over 1000 yards for the 7th time in his career but this season he is on pace for his second worst season ever.

I suppose he may be losing a step but if they want to win some of the big games they are finding themselves in this season they need him to be more of a factor – he hasn’t even topped 70 yards in any game this year.

Winning big games is about making some big plays and they can’t always rely on Cam Newton for them.

The ability to make those game changing plays is why New Orleans is always dangerous, while Carolina is still very much a work in progress.

Spread Pick: New Orleans +3
