A rematch of last year’s NFC Championship game will be for pride only for one team and for the other it will be critical just to stay in the playoff hunt. The Falcons have turned things around slightly as of late going 2-2 in their last four games overall but they are still winless on the road this year.

The 49ers on the other hand appear to be peaking at the right time – they are 9-2 in their last 11 games after going 1-2 to start the season. This game, on paper is a complete mismatch. But as the last few weeks have proven – anything can happen in the whacky world of the NFL.

The Atlanta Falcons have been plain disappointing this year – injuries on offense have really hurt this team. They will miss the playoffs for the first time since 2009! Being without Steven Jackson the first half of the year, dealing with a banged up Roddy White the majority of the season and losing Julio Jones to a season ending injury have really set this team back.

The Falcons rank 22nd in the league in scoring offense and 27th in the league in scoring defense, and are going up against one of the league’s most well-rounded teams on the road on Monday. Matt Ryan is having an OK season, completing 374 of 563 passes for 3,887 yards with 22 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. But he has been unable to sustain anything offensively this year and his offense has been unable to make up for the sketchy defense that has plagued this team for years.

Speaking of defense – the Falcons have the No. 25 pass defense and No. 29 rush defense in the NFL – not good at all. Both Robert Alford and Desmond Trufant, cornerbacks taken early in the 2013 NFL Draft haven`t panned out just yet and Asante Samuel, Sean Weatherspoon and Kroy Biermann have been injured all season long.

You won`t find Atlanta in the top 12 of any statistical category after 15 weeks – hence the 4-10 record.

The San Francisco 49ers have turned things around and you need not look further than Colin Kaepernick for the recent uptick. The team is 9-2 SU and 8-2-1 ATS record over its last 11 games. They have averaged 27.7 points per game over that stretch while allowing just 13.1 points per game to opponents.

The 49ers have won four consecutive games overall. Kaepernick has a 104.7 passer rating with seven touchdown passes and one turnover in that span after committing 12 through the first 10 games. Frank Gore has also re-established himself and has 196 yards rushing over the last two games. He now has seven – 1000 yard seasons as a pro.

Gore could be a major cog Sunday – the 49ers rank fifth in the NFL with 137.1 rushing yards per game and are tied for second with 16 touchdowns on the ground while the Falcons haven`t stopped anyone in the running game all year long.

Same goes for San Francisco`s passing game – Anquan Boldin, Vernon Davis and now Michael Crabtree make up a pretty good trio – one that should be able to have its way with Atlanta`s 25th ranked pass defense.

We all know what San Francisco`s defense is capable of. They are simply one of the two or three best all around units in the NFL and they bring their best in games on home turf. Remember what they did to a scorching Seattle offense a few weeks ago?

Monday Night Football Betting Prediction

A few trends to consider:
• ATL are 2-6 ATS in their last 8 Mon. games.
• ATL are 5-12 ATS in their last 17 games overall.
• SF are 22-5 ATS in their last 27 Mon. games.
• SF are 26-9-1 ATS in their last 36 games on grass.
• Over is 12-5 in SF last 17 games in Week 16.
• ATL are 3-7 ATS in their last 10 meetings.
• Underdog is 9-4 ATS in their last 13 meetings.

Not only have the Atlanta Falcons struggled this season but they have covered just two times in their last eight games on Monday night. San Francisco is rolling and is my pick to cover the lofty 10 1/2 point spread. I have little faith in any aspect of Atlanta’s game right now and I have faith in almost every aspect of San Francisco’s.

Pick: San Francisco 49ers -10 1/2
