For the Giants there is a little optimism after going 4-1 in their last five games after an 0-6 start. The Redskins on the other hand are a mess ahead of Sunday’s showdown – on defense and on offense as well.

The New York Giants have been arguably one of the biggest disappointments in the NFL this year – their opponent Sunday is another team that fits into that category. But there is a sense of optimism for the G-Men.

A four game win streak before last week’s loss is a good sign for this team – the running game has rediscovered its swagger thanks to Andre Brown and Brandon Jacobs who combined for 202 yards last week in a loss to the Cowboys and Eli Manning had done a better job of taking care of the ball up until last week.

That said the Giants offense has been bad this year – Eli Manning has completed 57% of his passes for just 2760 yards while throwing for only 14 TDs and 17 huge interceptions. He threw for only 174 yards last week and looked typically out of sync against a very vulnerable Dallas defense. Victor Cruz has just one TD catch since Week 1 and Hakeem Nicks has zero TDs on the year- unreal!

New York’s defense hasn’t been as bad as one would think – they are 31st in the NFL with just 18 sacks but this unit is quietly 12th in the NFL in overall defense and seventh versus the run. Unfortunately the Giants defense has fallen victim to their offense turning the ball over regularly and giving the opposing offense short field with which to work with.

Not a whole lot has gone right for the Washington Redskins this year – Robert Griffin III is clearly not what he was last year, the O-line has been terrible in protecting their franchise QB and the defense has been dreadful in every aspect of the game. There is zero chemistry on this team as evidenced on Monday night against San Francisco.

Robert Griffin turned in another clunker and Washington was limited to a pair of field goals and 190 yards by San Francisco. Griffin threw for a season-low 118 yards and an interception, giving him 11 on the season – more than double the total from his mesmerizing rookie campaign.

Most of the Redskins woes have been blamed on the public free-fall of Robert Griffin who is in danger of losing the room in Washington. To be fair – he clearly isn’t 100% – his knee has limited his mobility and has prompted opposing players to come out in the media and say that Griffin shouldn’t be playing at all.

Washington should still be able to run the ball against Washington – SHOULD. Alfred Morris had two stellar games against New York last season, rushing for 124 and 120 yards and the team has outrushed their opponents by an average of 35 yards per game this year. It isn’t translating to wins however.

Defense has been an issue in Washington as well this season. Washington’s defense has held only one opponent under 24 points and ranks 31st in points allowed (30.7) and 26th against the pass (270.6 yards).

Sunday Night Football Betting Prediction

A few trends to consider:

• Under is 8-1 in NYG last 9 games on grass.
• NYG are 6-1-1 ATS in their last 8 games in Week 13.
• Under is 12-3 in NYG last 15 road games.
• WAS are 1-8 ATS in their last 9 vs. NFC.
• Under is 6-2 in WAS last 8 games in Week 13.
• WAS are 12-5 ATS in their last 17 vs. NFC East.

The Skins have beaten New York three of the last four meetings and have covered the last five games in this series but have lost all four prime-time appearances this season.

This game is too close to call for Vegas oddsmakers but a look at the season numbers suggests that it really shouldn’t be. The G-Men still have something to play for – their feint playoff hopes are still alive while the Skins look as though they have given up on the season. I, like many have zero faith in Mike Shanahan and Robert Griffin at this point of the season.

Pick: New York Giants
