St. Louis Rams vs. San Diego Chargers Preview

On the season the Rams are 4-6 ATS and they have an O/U record of 5-5 and the Chargers are 5-5 ATS and they have an O/U record of 4-6.

This season the Chargers are 4-1 at home and the Rams are 2-3 on the road.

In their last games the Chargers beat the Oakland Raiders 13-6 and the Rams beat the Denver Broncos 22-7.

Are the Rams better than their 4-6 record indicates? They have only faced 2 teams this season that currently have winning records and in 3 of their last 5 games they have beaten the 49ers, Seahawks, and Broncos. Still, they are 5.5-point road underdogs this Sunday in sunny San Diego.

The Chargers snapped their 3-game losing streak in their last game, but they were less than impressive only beating the winless Raiders by 7 points. They are in the Wild Card race and need a win in this game, as their remaining schedule is killer.

The Rams only rank 19th in the league in pass defense and 18th in run defense, but they shut down Peyton Manning and the Broncos last week. In that game they totally shut down the run and had 2 INT of Manning.

Phillip Rivers has a solid WR corps and TE Antonio Gates, but he has still been struggling. He only passed for 193 yards in the Oakland win and was sacked twice. One of the main reasons the Rams have won 3 of their last 5 games is their pass rush has come alive.

One major positive thing for the Chargers in last week’s win was that Ryan Mathews played and had a good game with 70 rushing yards. Him being healthy is key to the Chargers down the stretch. Last week the Rams held the Broncos to only 28 rushing yards in the shocking win.

Shaun Hill got his job back after coming back from an early season injury and he played well last week getting the best of Manning. Kenny Britt had a big game with 128 receiving yards, but the Rams are still very thin at the WR position. Hill will be tested in this game from a San Diego pass defense that ranks 6th in the league.

Tre Mason rushed for 113 yards in the Denver game and look for the rookie RB to get his chances in this game.

The San Diego run D ranks in the middle of the pack (12th), and they held Oakland to only 71 yards on the ground last week.
