The Jacksonville Jaguars head to Tennessee this week in an AFC South showdown that has enormous implications. Both teams lost last week, but both are still relevant in the AFC South race. The quarterbacks on both teams are question marks going into the game – David Gerrard injured his thumb last week and Rusty Smith was totally ineffective for the Titans last week.

The Jaguars rode a Hot streak into New York last week and nearly pulled off what would have been an epic upset. They weren’t particularly good on offense but they were surprisingly good on defense.

David Gerrard followed up three strong games with just 162 yards passing, no touchdowns and one interception last week. The Jags currently own the leagues 29th ranked passing game (143.09 yards per game), so not much was expected anyway. It was Maurice Jones-Drew and the 4thranked running game that produced big-time last week. Jones-Drew now has run for 991 yards this season – good for 4th in the NFL. He has gone over 100 yards in each of his last four games.

Jacksonville’s has shown that they have a defense! Stop the presses. Despite ranking 27th versus the pass (261 yards per game) and 20th versus the run (114.27 yards per game), this unit has gelled and has arguably been a top half defense in the last month.

The Tennessee Titans are unraveling before our very eyes. They have lost four straight games and they hit rock bottom last week against the Houston Texans. In that game, the Titans were shut out, they gained 162 total yards and Chris Johnson only gained five yards on seven carries.

The good news for the Titans is that Kerry Collins and Kenny Britt may return this week as well as Offensive Coordinator Mike Heimerdinger, who may be on the sidelines despite cancer treatments. The other good news is that even though the Titans have been brutal, they still have something to play for – they are still only a game out of first place in the AFC South.

Tennessee has the 31st ranked passing offense and the 11th ranked running game. Expect a bounce back performance this week – they certainly couldn’t be worse than they were last week. Kerry Collins is an enormous upgrade at quarterback and Chris Johnson is bound to bounce back from the worst performance of his career.

Defensively, the Titans were OK last week and have been OK all season long. When they get offensive support, they look great.

Betting Prediction:

The Titans are 6-2 SU in their last eight games versus the Titans. The Titans are 15-8 SU in their last 23 home games but are taking on a Jacksonville team that is just 2-6 SU in their last eight games overall. Jacksonville has struggled versus Tennessee, going 3-8 SU and 1-4 ATS in recent meetings in Tennessee.

The Tennessee Titans need Kerry Collins to start this game if they hope to compete. The Titans have had the Jags number in recent years including a game earlier this season in which David Gerrard was held to just 49 yards passing. However, the Jags have a new found confidence and they gave the New York Giants quite a scare last week. I like the confident Jags to beat the Titans this week and to keep the pressure on the Indianapolis Colts.

Betting Pick: Jacksonville Jaguars
