Carolina Panthers vs. Seattle Seahawks Preview

The Seattle Seahawks (5-6) are in first place in the weak NFC West and they can stay that way with a win over the Carolina Panthers (1-10), who are playing for pride and have the inside track to get the #1 pick in the next draft. NFL lines have the Seahawks as 6-point favorites with a total of 40.

In their last games the Seahawks lost to the Kansas City Chiefs 42-24 and the Panthers lost to the Cleveland Browns 24-23.

The Seahawks have lost 4 of their last 5 games and in those losses they have given up an average of 37.5 points per game. In their last game they gave up 503 yards of offense including 270 rushing yards.

Both teams have had major injury problems this season and Carolina’s leading rusher DeAngelo Williams was placed in IR in the middle of last month.

The Seahawks have lost 2 straight and home and have not lost 3 straight home games since the 2008 season. They will try to avoid their 3rd straight home loss against a Panthers’ squad that has yet to win on the road this season (0-5).

The Panthers had their highest scoring game last week (24) and even though they have the league’s worst ranked offense they have gained over 300 yards in 2 of their last 3 games. QB Jimmy Clausen will get the start this week and he will be facing a Seahawks’ secondary that has struggled all season. Football betting

Heading into this NFC match up the Panthers are 3-8 ATS and the Seahawks are 5-6 ATS. Both teams have covered the spread once in their last 5 games, but Seattle is 7-2 ATS in their last 9 games as a home favorite of 3.5-10.

Matt Hasselbeck leads the Seahawks and their 17th ranked passing offense and in the loss to Kansas City last week he threw for 282 yards with 2 TD and 2 INT. Leading Seattle WR Mike Williams (52 rec 654 yards 1 TD) is questionable for this game with a foot injury and the Seahawks really hope he can go, as after Williams the top WR only has 20 catches. Hasselbeck will be facing the strength of the Panthers’ D, which is their pass defense that ranks 7th in the league.

Where the Panthers are weak on defense is against the run. Last week they gave up 152 rushing yards to Cleveland and overall they rank 25th defending the run. However, that weakness may not be exposed against a Seattle rushing offense that ranks dead last in the league. RB Marshawn Lynch has only gained more than 50 rushing yards 1 time in his 7 games with Seattle since coming over from Buffalo. Hasselbeck may have to shoulder the offensive load, which will that much harder if Williams can’t go.

Clausen passed for 195 yards with 0 TD and 1 INT in last week’s loss to the Browns. He does not have a great WR corps, but he may have a decent game against a Seattle pass D that ranks 30th in the league.

Even with Williams out the RB duo of Jonathan Stewart and Mike Goodson combined to rush for 153 yards last week. In that game Stewart rushed for 98 yards averaging an impressive 8.2 yards per carry. This duo will get a lot of touches against a Seattle rushing defense that has been terrible lately and ranks 22nd in the league.

Both teams have major issues on both sides of the ball, but even though Seattle can’t seem to play any defense lately they will play better against Carolina and their poor offense. Look for the Seattle offense, especially Hasselbeck, to play well, as the Seahawks will easily win this home game and cover the 6-point spread. With the defense each team has I think the Over is also a safe bet.

Betting Trends

Carolina is 3-7 ATS in their last 10 games as a road underdog of 3.5-10 and Seattle 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games against teams with a losing record and 11-4 ATS in their last 15 games as a home favorite.

Pick: Seahawks -6 and the Over
