Atlanta 2013-2014 NFL Futures Lines & Predictions

The Falcons have proven they know how to win games during the regular season but the playoffs have been a different story. They caught a break last year with New Orleans in disarray but with the Saints “back” and Tampa and Carolina improving it might be harder to maintain their recent success.

2013 Atlanta Falcons Preview/Predictions
2012 Record: 14-4
ATS Record: 9-8-1
2013 Team Futures
Super Bowl Odds: +1400
Conference Odds: +850
Division Odds: +120

Understanding that they need to get better in a couple of key areas the Falcons added a couple of key players in the offseason, names that we all are familiar with. The one they are expecting the most of is RB Steven Jackson, who will replace Michael Turner, while on defense they added pass rush specialist Osi Umenyiora, who has championship experience with the New York Giants.

The Falcons primary area for improvement heading into 2013 is running the ball. When Turner first came to Atlanta he was a real monster but his numbers declined the last two seasons, with last year’s 800 yards his lowest total as a Falcon. Input Steven Jackson who has been one of the most consistent performers in the NFL since joining the league. Jackson has put up 8 straight 1000 yard seasons and is a much better receiver than Turner out of the backfield. If he can be a consistent running threat, spelled occasionally by Jacquizz Rogers, then Atlanta should be much better than 29th rushing and be able to be more potent in the playoffs too…if they make it.

When it comes to passing the Falcons are just as effective as any team in the league. They finished 7th in the NFL in passing yards per game but that is pretty impressive given they were often playing with the lead and usually go with a standard lineup of two receivers and a tight end. The Falcons were able to coax TE Tony Gonzalez into another season and based on what we saw last year he should be just as good again. Gonzalez, combined with the always steady Roddy White and physical freak Julio Jones, are a lethal trio. They have made some changes on the offensive line but as long as the protection holds this team should be very good on offense. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Atlanta’s offense defines them but it will probably be the stoutness of the defense that determines juts how far this team ultimately goes. Last year they were 5th in points allowed but that stat might have been more impressive had they not been 24th in yards allowed. One of the facts that helped is they were 5th in the league with 31 takeaways and the fact that teams are often pressed to go for more yards in games when they are down(but sometimes come up short of points). Takeaways tend to balance out over time so the Falcons might not be as fortunate this time around. Atlanta used 6 of their 8 draft picks on defense including first round corner Desmond Trufant, who they are expecting to start, so you know there is attention being paid to that side of the ball.

2013 Outlook: The Falcons won 13 games last season and that number will drop this season. They have a chance to put the league on notice by opening on the road at New Orleans but I think that game will do more to prove that New Orleans is back and means business. Atlanta gets the AFC East, which is weak, but also the NFC West which is really strong. On the second to last Monday night of the season they travel to San Francisco to try and exorcize the 49ers but I think that could be a must win for a team I think will go just 9-7.

2013 Falcons Predictions:

Place they will finish in the NFC South: 2nd
Place they will finish in the NFC: 7th
