Detroit Lions vs. Minnesota Vikings Preview

Earlier this season at Detroit the Vikings beat the Lions 20-13. Adrian Peterson leads the league in rushing and if the Lions cannot keep him in check they may be in trouble.

In their last games the Vikings lost to the Seattle Seahawks 30-20 while the Lions beat the Jacksonville Jaguars 31-14.

On the season the Lions are 4-4 ATS and they have an Over/Under record of 5-2-1 and the Vikings are 3-5-1 ATS and they have an Over/Under record of 4-5.

The Lions have the top ranked passing offense in the league led by Matthew Stafford, who threw for 285 yards in his last game and was not picked off. Star WR Calvin Johnson had a big day last week despite a sore knee and he and TE Brandon Pettigrew will be up against a Vikes’ pass D that ranks a respectable 9th in the league. Minnesota also has a good pass rush, led by Jared Allen, with the 7th most sacks in the NFL.

The Minnesota rushing defense has really struggled giving up an average of nearly 170 rushing yards per game in their last 4 games. The Lions do not have a great rushing offense, but Mikel Leshoure and Joique Bell combined for 4 TD in the win over the Jags last week and Detroit rushed for a season high 149 yards. After a good start Christian Ponder has not been playing well with 8 picks and only 6 TD in his last 5 games. WR Percy Harvin has had a good season, but the Vikes still do not have a good WR corps. They will need to rely on Peterson to play well and has averaged 152.7 yards in the last 3 games including galloping for 182 last week against Seattle.

The Lions have a decent defense ranking 8th in the league in pass defense and 8th in pass defense and 14th in run defense, which will be more important facing Peterson.

Peterson rushed for over 100 yards in the first game between these division rivals and Stafford passed for 319 yards, but did not throw a TD.

In some betting trends for this NFC North game the Lions are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games overall, 3-8-1 ATS vs. a team with a winning record, and they have an Over record of 7-2-1 in their last 10 games.

The Vikings are 0-3-1 ATS in their last 4 games overall, 2-6-1 ATS in their last 9 home games, and they have an Over record of 6-2 in their last 8 games following a S.U. loss.

Jason’s Pick: The Lions are only 1-4-2 ATS in their last 7 games facing the Vikings, but that trend will not continue. I think Peterson will have another good game, but Stafford will as well and the Lions will win and cover.
