2014 AFC East Predictions – Odds To Win Super Bowl XLIX

Looking For AFC East Picks?

Belichick and Co. set their sights on a sixth-straight division title

You have to go all the way back to the 2000 season to find the last time New England posted a losing record (5-11) and was out of the division title race. That was Bill Belichick’s first year as head coach and since that point his teams have won the AFC East in 11 of the next 13 seasons.

The only blips on the screen were when the Jets captured the crown in 2002 and Miami won the division in 2008, so while you may not want to wager on the Patriots winning the AFC East this year given the lack of value in the current odds, be very careful wagering against them.

The current odds certainly point to another AFC East title, but the Patriots measure success in Super Bowl titles and that drought enters its 10th season. The last time they made it to the big game was in 2011 only to be denied for the second-straight time by the New York Giants.

Tom Brady is still running the offense and New England hopes to have a healthy Rob Gronkowski back in the lineup to bolster the passing attack, but the ground game could be the key to another deep run in the playoffs.

The Patriots were ranked ninth in the NFL in rushing yards last season behind Stevan Ridley and they added James White in the draft. Belichick used his first pick in the draft to address the defensive line by selecting tackle Dominique Easley.

The Dolphins improved to 8-8 last season to end a run of four-straight losing seasons, but it remains to be seen if third-year head coach Joe Philbin can get this team to take the next step in 2014.

He took a few steps in the right direction by addressing both the offensive and defensive line this past offseason through free agency and the draft.

Offensive linemen Branden Albert came over from Kansas City and Ja’Wuan James was added with the 19th overall pick of the draft. Miami also came to terms with free agent defensive tackle Earl Mitchell.

Most of the Dolphins’ chances to post a winning record will hinge on the continued development of third-year quarterback Ryan Tannehill, who has shown some flashes of greatness in his first two seasons.

AFC East Prediction: 2nd

Rex Ryan made a huge splash when he assumed the role of the Jets’ head coach in 2009 by leading his team to two-straight appearances in the AFC title game, but it has been a struggle since then with three non-winning seasons including an 8-8 record last year.

To turn things around, Ryan will look to get back to the basics of running the ball and playing defense.

Second-year quarterback Geno Smith will be pushed with the addition of Michael Vick as his backup, but the biggest offseason acquisition could be running back Chris Johnson.

If he can return to anywhere near the form that led to a 2000+ rushing yards in 2009, this offense could once again be an asset as opposed to being a liability.

AFC East Prediction: 3rd

Buffalo Bills

It has been quite a long time since the Bills were able to circle the wagons to a winning season although they appear to be going in circles with a 6-10 record the last three years. The last time Buffalo finished above .500 was in 2004 and the last time it won the division was in 1995.

Doug Marrone was brought in last season as head coach to turn things around and he handed the keys to the offense over to rookie quarterback EJ Manuel.

This offseason he added a major weapon to the offense by drafting wide receiver Sammy Watkins with the fourth overall pick.

This could make things very interesting considering that the Bills remain one of the top rushing teams in the NFL behind CJ Spiller and Fred Jackson.

AFC East Prediction: 4th
