Seattle Seahawks Betting Odds – NFL Football Futures

The Seattle Seahawks are coming off a year in which CHANGE was the order of the day. With a slew of roster moves, Coach Pete Carroll attempted to reshape this team by creating competition for every position.

A look at the numbers:

Last season – 7-9 SU, 7-9 ATS
Projection this season – 7-9 (3rd in NFC West)
Seahawks Super Bowl XLVI Odds: +10000
Seahawks 2011/12 NFC Odds – +2500
2011 Seahawks NFC West Lines – +600

Somehow, a playoff position resulted! Judging by the post lockout roster moves that the Hawks have made, a similar culture appears to be in the works this season.

There was little doubt that Seattle was going to lose Matt Hasselbeck this season – his age, his injury history and his desire to garner a multi-year contract made it easy for the Hawks to walk away. The trick for Seattle was to improve despite their leader moving on. Enter Tavarris Jackson who will now compete with Charlie Whitehurst for the starting job.

Jackson underwhelmed in Minnesota but he does have terrific athleticism and an improved knowledge of the game having been Brett Favre’s understudy for a couple of years. Charlie Whitehurst is a work in progress – he was OK at times last season and dreadful at others. The verdict? We will have to wait and see on these two.

Seattle certainly is no better at QB than they were last season but they could potentially own this year’s Breakout Player.

Other than at QB, the Seahawks appear to be set on offense. Marshawn Lynch, Justin Forsett and a healthy Leon Washington make up a pretty good Running Back trio. Lynch will have to be better than he was last season and hopes are that the “Run Heard Round the Northwest” in the playoffs last season acts as a catalyst for him this season. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Lynch’s change of pace backs are superb – it will be up the O-line to make them look good – a repeat of their 31st rushing rank from last season will be utterly unacceptable.

New Offensive Line Coach Tom Cable will have a young and talented group this season headed by a hopefully healthy Russell Okung.

Sydney Rice was added to a rather anemic receiving corp. but the jury on Rice is still out. Rice joins a rejuvenated Mike Williams, second year prospect Golden Tate, Deon Butler and Ben Obamanu – hardly a group that strikes the fear of God into anyone.

The addition of Rice however makes this team a whole lot formidable and far less one-dimensional. (Note: Yesterday the Hawks signed Zach Miller from the Raiders in FA) Nice move Seattle, never hurts getting a PRO Bowl TE on your team. Two TE sets with John Carlson should provide some matchup problems for their NFC West foes.

Defensively, Seattle will be a huge mystery. New coaches and roster moves make this group difficult to handicap. They were ranked 25th in points allowed (25.4), 27th in yards allowed (368.6), 27th in passing yards allowed (249.6), and 21st in rushing yards allowed (118.9). Improvement defensively is key to Seattle’s 2011 success.

HOW IT STANDS NOW

Unfortunately for the Seattle Seahawks, the teams in the weak NFC West have gotten better while they look to have regressed in a few areas.

In a quarterback driven league, it is difficult to envision the Hawks making much of a splash with Tavarris Jackson or Charlie Whitehurst.

Consider Seattle a “work in progress” mired in Year 2 of Pete Carroll’s five year plan. Patience will have to be key once again this year in the Pacific Northwest – wins will be hard to come by.

Seahawks NFC West Prediction:

The Hawks finish 7-9 but show glimmers of hope for the 2012 season.
