The two will face off on Saturday, Dec. 21 in the first game of the college football bowl season.

Washington State

The Washington State Cougars have encountered a drastic turnaround this season. The addition of head coach Mike Leach was supposed to make this team better in the long run, but following his first season in 2012, it looked like a longer project than some anticipated.

As it turned out, this Cougars team has been much improved since the first game of the season. It went 6-6 on the year, and it is looking to finish the season above .500.

It’s been a decade since this team has been in a bowl game, but short-term history is more in this team’s favor.

It went 9-3 ATS this season, and straight up, its losses included Auburn, who is on its way to a national championship appearance, as well as No. 5 Stanford, No. 2 Oregon, Pac-12 title runner-up Arizona State and the in-state rival Washington Huskies.

Colorado State

Colorado State may be headed back to a bowl game, but it’s certainly not because of its strength of schedule. The losses on its schedule don’t come from the same caliber as WSU’s opponents; that said, it did gain experience playing against the then-No. 1 Alabama Crimson Tide.

Like the Cougars, it only took the Rams two seasons under their new head coach to make this kind of turnaround.

The team began the 2013 season just 2-4, but a strong finish put them at better than .500 at this point in the year.

Because of Colorado State’s improvements, they’ve been one of the better teams to place your money on ATS. Their reputation as a bad team has resulted in some massive spreads in favor of their opposition, but improvements across the board have put them in solid position to cover the spreads all year.

Unfortunately for Colorado State, people are catching on, and the spread isn’t nearly as impressive this time around.

With Colorado State a 4.5-point favorite entering the game, a simple touchdown gives WSU the victory ATS. The Cougs are giving up more points than they’re scoring on the year, but they played a schedule that was unmatched by most, and their dominant passing attack should be enough to give them a win both straight up and against the spread.

Prediction: Washington State -4.5
