Penn State has had more than its share of troubles against Minnesota since joining the Big Ten, but the oddsmakers seem to think they will handle the Golden Gophers this week at home.

Once again, Penn State has managed to escape the criticism other Big Ten teams face after the non-conference season because they have a tendency of having easy schedules and running up the score on helpless teams like Temple and Syracuse.

Penn State has a good all-around team this year led by senior Daryll Clark at QB and Evan Royster at RB, but the team still has some holes on the offensive line and inexperience at other spots.

Meanwhile, Minnesota has quietly jumped to a 2-1 start in the Big Ten and they also played California tough in their place.

The Gophers are still a ways away from being a Big Ten contender but they have a solid team led by QB Adam Weber and WR Eric Decker, one of the top QB-WR combos in the country.

The college football betting spread for this game in Happy Valley on Saturday is Penn State by -17 ½ as the favorite while Minnesota is the underdog against the spread yet again.

Contrary to popular belief, the Gophers are actually 4-2 in their last 6 games SU vs. Penn State.

Spread-wise, the Nittany Lions are just 2-6 in their past 8 against Minnesota going in. Combine those two numbers with Penn State’s still somewhat unproven team that was beaten soundly by Iowa at home and it makes a lot of sense to go with the Gophers to cover the spread in this college football contest on Saturday.

Weber is an accurate passer and Decker is tough to cover, and the Gophers’ strength on defense matches up well with PSU’s weakness.

The Gopher d-line is of high quality and if they can get pressure on Clark and slow down the run game then Minnesota has an excellent chance to be competitive in this Big Ten college football game this weekend both straight up and against the spread.

Minnesota will have a hard time running the ball but PSU can be hurt with the short passing game and Weber’s running. And even if PSU gets an early lead expect Minnesota to put up some points and claw back into the game using the passing of Weber.

The pick: Minnesota (-17 ½) and the over (46)
