The Arkansas Razorbacks (2-1 SU, 0-2 ATS), who took it pretty heavy on the chin last week, may be running into a freight train this weekend when they visit the Texas Longhorns (3-0 SU & ATS) in NCAA inter-conference football action. The game is set to get underway at 3:30 PM ET at Memorial Stadium (natural turf) in Austin, TX.

Arkansas, coached by turncoat Bobby Petrino, has not been impressive, to say the least. The Hogs squeaked by Division 1-AA Western Illinois and Sun Belt entry Louisiana-Monroe in its first two games, then got pounded by five touchdowns at home against Alabama as an eight-point underdog – giving up 328 rushing yards in the process. Casey Dick (20-39, 3 INT’s vs. Alabama) is finding things a lot harder without Darren McFadden and Felix Jones in the backfield.

Texas has taken no prisoners, averaging 500 yards a game, and Colt McCoy is putting up stats that would have seemed to justify the bidding war (did I really say that?) that erupted for him after his star-studded high school career. He’s ranked third nationally in passing efficiency, completing 78% of his passes, with an 11-1 TD-INT ratio. Of course, the opponents have been FAU, Rice and UTEP, who don’t really defend, but when you consider that McCoy has made plenty of unforced errors in the past, that represents an advance in his sharpness, and a boost in confidence.

On what basis can we possibly recommend an Arkansas crew that yields 5.2 yards a rush attempt, doesn’t rush the passer all that well, can’t protect the passer (10 sacks surrendered), and has not been able to replace its star backfield? We really can’t. Petrino may be someone who will deliver an explosive offense to Fayetteville, but that is still something that is in progress. Texas brings all the edges, including Brian Orakpo (3.5 sacks), the All-American who will be in Dick’s face all day. We’ll lay it with the Longhorns, the 27-point favorite in the BetUS NCAA college football betting odds.
