For a team that got off to a decent start, winning four of its first six games straight-up (as well as going 5-3 in the first eight in the college football betting lines), Arizona State’s season has gone sharply downhill. I suppose some of it can be attributed to switch around with quarterbacks, but the problems have been deeper than that.

ASU didn’t lose Danny Sullivan until three games ago, and they have now lost five consecutive games. Some of the defensive statistics that were glittering in the early going have declined somewhat, but they are still pretty strong; the Sun Devils have held the opposition to 3.3 yards a carry and less than 53% completions, so they are going to show up on defense.

No, they have had difficulty because not only was the senior, Sullivan, a limited passer (54% completions, 8 TD’s, 9 INT’s), but the weaponry around him was limited as well. The running game is lacking, and the receiving corps came in without much of a reputation and hasn’t done very much to establish one. Now they are down to a third-string quarterback, Samson Szakacsy, who hasn’t embarrassed himself, but hasn’t been overly productive either (310 yards in two games where he had extended action). Even though he was thought by many to be the front-runner out of spring practice, I’m not sure he is the guy who is going to make the game-changing plays.

Arizona has lost consecutive games to California and Oregon, and the latter, a draining 44-41 affair that went to two overtimes, might have the kind of carry-over than might affect the Wildcats coming into this game.

Nonetheless, they have the QB in this matchup who can really move it down the field in Nick Foles (2051 yards, 17 TD’s) and admittedly, Foles will have to assume great responsibility, since Arizona maybe sitting its top three tailbacks – Nic Grigsby, Keola Antolin and Greg Nwoko – with shoulder injuries. “Shouldering” the burden in the backfield is the relatively unaccomplished Nick Booth.

The ‘Cats (3.8 ypc allowed) can conceivably make ASU’s offense overly dependent on what Szakacsy can do for it, and between the two signal-callers, he will be the one less likely to take control of matters.

This is a series that, from the standpoint of college football betting lines, has been dominated by the visitor, which has covered 13 of the last 17 meetings. I can see that happening again here, and the biggest reason is the considerable advantage Arizona has at the quarterback spot.

After two laughers to begin the season, ASU has topped 24 points only once. There is only so far this offense is going to go. We’re taking Arizona, the 3.5-point favorite in the BetUS college football betting lines, but because of the uncertainty in the backfield, we can’t make it a bigger play.
