Connecticut: The Week That Was

The Huskies didn’t play the past week, and for a team that lost cornerback Jasper Howard earlier in the season, that’s the best possible thing that could have happened for coach Randy Edsall’s club. Finally, UConn was able to step away from the football field and take time to grieve for a beloved teammate.

The kids from Connecticut were also able to let go of the frustration of losing a series of close games, the most recent one being a 47-45 decision at Cincinnati. Everyone knows by now about Cincinnati’s explosive offense under quarterback Zach Collaros, but Connecticut rolled up big numbers against those very same Bearcats on Nov. 7 in the state of Ohio.

UConn running back Jordan Todman rushed for 162 yards, and interception-prone quarterback Zach Frazer threw for 261 yards without a single pick, as the Huskies’ offense hummed on the road.

Notre Dame: The Week That Was

The bowl outlook for the reeling Irish is even cloudier after a 27-22 loss at Pittsburgh. The Irish did mount a bold comeback after falling behind by a 27-9 score early in the fourth quarter, but a controversial ruling by the Big East replay booth deprived quarterback Jimmy Clausen of an extra snap in the game’s final minutes.

On Notre Dame’s final drive, the Irish – down by five and trying to score a go-ahead touchdown – faced a 3 rd and 16 in their own territory. Clausen was hit from behind by a Pitt defender, but his arm seemed to move forward with possession of the ball. The officials on the field ruled an incomplete pass, but when the replay booth overturned the call, Pittsburgh was awarded a fumble, and the game was over.

The Week That Is:

Connecticut keeps playing well, but not quite well enough to win. The Huskies’ recent losses at West Virginia and Cincinnati were instances in which quality performances simply weren’t rewarded with a desired result.

After an off week, UConn should play well again, and that will create – no surprise here – yet another close game for a Notre Dame team that seems genetically programmed to play deep into the fourth quarter on every single Saturday of this 2009 season.

A lot of points should be scored in this game, and Notre Dame probably won’t run away with the proceedings, but it’s hard to imagine the Fighting Irish losing a third straight game with all of their offensive weapons. Golden Tate is certainly one of the top three receivers in the United States, and now that teammate Michael Floyd has rejoined him on the perimeter, the Irish are loaded with playmakers.

It should be fun, and it should be close, with Notre Dame doing just enough to win its seventh game of the year.
