Everyone agrees that Ty Willingham is a good guy. They said the same thing when he was at Notre Dame and the program sunk into mediocrity. But on Monday the inevitable happened to Willingham – he was forced out of his job, although he will continue to coach the Huskies for the rest of the season, creating what is, in effect, a lame duck situation. At this point, the U-Dub program, which is without a “Dub” this season, is so desperate that it is considering reaching out for Jim Mora Jr., even though he is actually committed to coaching the Seattle Seahawks next season after Mike Holmgren retires.

It has gone beyond the point where anyone is even saying, “You can’t blame it all on him.” This team lost Jake Locker with a thumb injury, and his replacement, Ronnie Fouch, has done the best he could but has still completed less than 50% of his passes. There is no running game, which had previously been supplied by Locker. The Huskies are 117th in scoring, 108th in total offense, 116th in rushing defense (allowing 5.7 ypc), 118th in pass efficiency defense, 119th in sacks (only five), 119th in tackles for loss, 107th in sacks allowed. They’re being outscored by an average of 40-16. Do we even have to continue?

The game against Notre Dame, which had fired Willingham previously, was the nadir, as Washington gained just 124 total yards and did not cross the 50-yard line until the second half. Meanwhile, the Fighting Irish, not known for its ground attack, had 252 rushing yards.

A couple of weeks ago we wondered how charitable USC might be if they played a team that was hopelessly out-manned (Washington State). We got our answer, as the Trojans rolled to a 69-0 win, holding the Cougars to 116 total yards. USC has held opponents to just eight points a game, best in the nation, and they are also first in total defense and pass efficiency defense. Pete Carroll has to be poll-conscious right now, as his team, with one loss, remains very much in the BCS title picture. We’ll lay the points with USC, the 45-point favorite in the BetUS NCAA college football betting odds.

Our PLAY: USC -45 **
