MAC Conference Football Previews: Western Michigan

Head Coach: Bill Cubit
2009 Record: 5-7

Western Michigan Gambling Odds from Sportsbook.com to win BCS: (Field To Win Odds) 25/1

Any time a team changes starting quarterbacks, a transition period is common. But will the Western Michigan Broncos defy expectations by installing a different type of player under center this season – one with boom/bust potential?

And can their defense bounce back after a poor showing in 2009?

Team Strengths:

Even though accurate, reliable starter Tim Hiller is gone, I’m not totally convinced Western Michigan’s passing game will regress this season. In fact, it could be a strength. New starter Alex Carder isn’t a sure thing but he has the potential. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

He has a strong arm, good for deep balls, and he’s a much brasher and more fiery leader than Hiller was. He also has some downfield targets that can maximize his strengths.

Guys like Juan Nunez can stretch the field and Robert Amhelm is a reliable possession guy.

Team Weaknesses:

The Broncos can’t defend. They ranked 101st in the nation in total yards allowed last season. They do have a glimmer of hope thanks to new defensive co-ordinator Dave Cohen, who is determined to make this unit more aggressive and physical. He at least has a few pieces to build around in defensive tackle John Rice and safety Doug Wiggins.

Those two can lead by example.

Though several of their starters return on the offensive line, the Broncos’ running game doesn’t look like anything special.

They’re a pass-first offense and I’m not sure how enamoured they are with new starter Aaron Winchester.

Western Michigan 2010-2011 Football Predictions: 4-8

Though their passing game could surprise, Western Michigan has too many holes at other positions. Its rushing attack isn’t good enough to make opponents respect it; its defense is a work in progress to say the least. This team simply isn’t ready to contend in the MAC yet.

Maybe next year or the year after that.
