Sun Belt Conference Football Previews: FIU

Head Coach: Mario Cristobal
2009 Record: 3-9

Florida International Gambling Odds from Sportsbook.com to win BCS: +800000

Mario Cristobal was thrown into a difficult situation at Florida International, and he appeared to be making some progress, but last year’s team was definitely a disappointment. The Golden Panthers will need to do some improving this season or he will be squarely on the hot seat. The team has yet to make a bowl game in its eight years as an FBS program, but even five or six wins would be considered a big step in the right direction.

The good news for the Golden Panthers is they have a lot of returning players from last year. The bad news is those returning players weren’t all that productive last year. They will need to improve and get some production from the newcomers to make a large step forward in the league.

Team Strengths:

The receivers are a deep group that should be able to get open on a consistent basis. In fact, the top eight pass catchers from 2009 return this season.

There will be plenty of options at the wide receiver position.

The FIU secondary is full of talent and they should be solid against the pass in 2010. Anthony Gaitor is one of the best cornerbacks in the league and the safeties have proven very capable of helping out in pass coverage.

Ty Hilton helps the kickoff and punt return teams be among the best in the conference. Hilton has the ability to break it every single time he touches the football.

Team Weaknesses:

The defensive line is easily the biggest concern for the Golden Panthers. Last year, they allowed 233 yards per game rushing, and it doesn’t appear they have done anything to shore up their defensive front in 2010.

The offensive line is also a major weakness for the team. The line has had trouble keeping opponents out of the backfield the last couple years. This is a veteran group, but they haven’t proven that they are able to do the job.

The quarterback situation is up in the air at this point. Wesley Carroll was thought to be the front runner for the job after transferring in from Mississippi State, but Wayne Younger is still in the picture as well. They need to find a solid signal caller who will take advantage of their depth at the wide receiver spot.

Florida International 2010-2011 Football Predictions: 2-10

Many are predicting this team to improve quite a bit in 2010, but I just don’t know if they can with the huge question marks on both the offensive and defensive lines. Any team with a decent running game will control the ball and crush the Golden Panthers run defense.

I think this will be a long year for FIU and the fans are liable to be calling for a new coach at the end of the year.
