I think the biggest question in this one is which UCLA team will show up.

The Bruins has won three straight after dropping its first two including an embarrassing 35-0 loss to Stanford in its season opener.

Since then coach Neuheisel’s Bruins has rebounded toppling then-No. 23 Houston 31-13 and prevailed in a 34-12 road upset at then-No. 7 Texas. However, they backslid a bit last Saturday, needing a late rally to overcome a wretched Washington State, 42-28 at the Rose Bowl.

Meanwhile, the Golden Bears of Cal are suffering the same types of lapses as they started the season by crushing UC Davis 52-3 and Colorado 52-7, but followed up with a humiliating 52-31 loss at Nevada, and then a 10-9 loss at No. 14 Arizona, as Cal just couldn’t find its offense.

So as you can see this could go either way come Saturday.

To set the stage UCLA leads the series 49-30-1, but the G-Bears has won the last two meetings, 45-26 last season and 41-20 in 2008.

The Bruins will bring its new pistol offense — the same type of offensive scheme that Nevada used to destroy Cal and that has been averaging 262.4 yards per game on the ground.

UCLA is scoring an average of 25.8 points per game–35.7 points over its past three games–but its passing game is still rather quiescent, managing only 91 yards per contest.

The team will however get a much-needed boost as starting quarterback Kevin Prince, who sat out the Washington State game because of a knee ailment, was medically cleared to practice on Monday, and is expected to start against Cal on Saturday.

The Cal pass rush has performed well managing 11 sacks, so the Bruins O-line will need to shore up its weaknesses quickly as they have offered up Prince 10 times this year.

But if Bears can’t slow UCLA’s rushing attack, it won’t matter. That includes finding a way to slow down running back Johnathan Franklin who has 625 yards and five touchdowns on 6.3 yards per rush.

Much like UCLA, Cal is averaging 36 points and 409.2 yards per game, mostly being generated by its ground assault led by RB Shane Vereen, who has rushed for 426 yards and six TDs. The junior also has two touchdown receptions.

The passing game has struggled a bit in the hands of QB Kevin Riley who has competed 60.7 percent of his passes for 848 yards and eight touchdowns, but has also misfired tossing four interceptions.

That really shouldn’t be a problem as the Bruins have managed just three interceptions, but have forced 14 fumbles, recovering eight, while posting 14 sacks.

Linebacker Akeem Ayers leads the defense with three sacks, two forced fumbles and two recovered as well as a pair of INTs and 33 tackles.

Still, UCLA is allowing 23.8 points and 366.4 yards per game— with 208.4 yards coming via the pass, which means Cal receivers Marvin Jones and  Keenan Allen could have a good day if they are able to avoid All-American safety Rahim Moore (27 tackles, 1 interception) and cornerback Sheldon Prince (5 pass breakups).

Cal is putting up good defensive numbers –18 points and 282.5 yards per game — but if the Bears want to win this one they will need to defend against UCLA’s pistol offense better than they did vs. Nevada, which torched the G-Bears for 316 rushing yards.
