No. 9 Arizona started its 2010 campaign with a pair of easy victories over Toledo and the Citadel and then silenced all doubters with an impressive win over then-No. 9 Iowa.

What followed was a an ugly 10-9 victory over Cal as the Wildcats’ Nick Foles’ 3-yard TD pass to Juron Criner with just over a minute remaining moved the team its first 4-0 start since opening the 1998 season with five victories, as well as its highest ranking since being No. 4 in the 1999 preseason poll.

They will now come out of a much-needed bye week ready to take on a visiting Oregon State Beavers team that appears to have finally found its offensive rhythm with a 31-28 win over Arizona State in its last outing.

The Beavs were ranked near the bottom in yards per game (113th at 270.3 yards), but turned it on racking up 416 against the Sun Devils, with 145 of those coming by way of RB Jacquizz Rodgers who turned in his best performance of the season that included a pair of TDs in the win.

He has six rushing TDs on the year, and will look to increase that number on Saturday against Arizona who he has had success against, putting up 85 yards and two scores on 16 carries against the Wildcats last season.

But it won’t be easy as the Arizona defense, once thought to be the teams’ weakness, has carried the ‘Cats though most of early part of its schedule. Arizona is ranked second in the FBS in total defense at 230.8 yards per game, third in scoring defense at 11.0 points a contest and fourth in passing defense at 129.5 yards a game. They’ve given up just three touchdowns – all to Iowa.

This could be a problem for Beavers’ QB Ryan Katz, who is coming off his best performances of the season, completing 19 of 29 passes for 260 yards and two touchdowns, all without No. 1 receiver James Rodgers, who sat out after sustaining a concussion in the loss at Boise State the week before.

Rodgers is expected back for Saturday’s game and that could just be the edge Oregon State needs.  The eldest Rogers has also had decent success against Arizona, rolling up 119 receiving yards and 116 yards on five kick returns in a 37-32 loss to Arizona back in Sept 2009.

Arizona’s  Foles made his debut in that meeting in Corvallis, passing for 254 yards and three touchdowns. The junior has established himself as one of the top quarterbacks in the Pac-10 this season, having thrown for 1,089 yards with six TDs and a conference-best 74 completion percentage.

The series dates back to 1966 with Arizona leading 21-11-1, but Oregon State has won nine of the last 11 meetings and four straight in Tucson a place where the Wildcats have won 15 of their last 18.

Oregon State has been very successful on the road in Pac-10 Conference play winning eight of its last 11. Arizona has held three of its first four opponents to single digits for scoring; Oregon State hasn’t been held to under 10 points in a regular season game since 2007.

This is a tough one to call, but I’m going with the ‘Cats. A better defense and more experience at QB should get the job done.
