No. 13 Utah heads home after two straight road games, and it should get a relatively easy match up with San Jose State coming to town. The Utes are huge favorites on college football odds; can they keep the training rolling?

Utah has opened its season with three straight wins (2-0-1 against the spread). The victories include an impressive win over (then No. 15) Pitt, plus two straight blowouts, including last week’s 56-14 romp in New Mexico. Losing quarterback Jordan Wynn hasn’t slowed Utah down even a hair; back-up Terrance Cain has an absolutely absurd 204.0 efficiency rating, which would lead the country if he had two more passing attempts.

Cain benefits from a brilliant running game. Four different players rushed for at least 25 yards against New Mexico, leading to a 180-yard team effort by the Utes. It’s been a fumble-prone group, however, which needs to stop with stronger opponents lurking around the corner.

On the other side of the football, Utah has been fantastic against the run, holding opponents to just 84 yards per game. Considering San Jose State is only averaging 67 yards per game on the ground, slowing down the Spartans offense shouldn’t be much of a challenge.

It’s not just the rushing attack, though; San Jose State (1-2, 1-1 ATS) is struggling everywhere on offense. The Spartans have scored less points this season (33) than Utah picked up in its last win. Quarterback Jordan La Secla is at least giving Spartans fans reason to hope; he led a pair of impressive touchdown drives in last week’s 16-11 win over Southern Utah—both coming in the final two minutes of each half.

Regardless, defenses can focus entirely on stopping La Secla and Co. with the running game struggling so badly.

A 48-3 shellacking to No. 1 Alabama notwithstanding, San Jose State has actually been pretty solid on defense. The Spartans “D” held a talented Wisconsin offense to a respectable 27 points a few weeks ago, not to mention just 191 yards passing.

Unfortunately, they were gouged for over 200 yards on the ground. Still, last week’s win over Southern Utah offered even more encouragement; San Jose State kept the Thunderbirds out of the end zone all afternoon and looked much better against the run (79 yards on 29 carries).

Any hope for an upset are slim, however. The San Jose offense is far too one-dimensional, and La Secla isn’t good enough to carry it on his own. With the running game a non-factor, Utah can concentrate wrecking havoc on the Spartans passing game.

Throw in a brilliant ground attack by Utah—and a quarterback who doesn’t make many mistakes—and this is a brutal mismatch. It looks like another blowout victory for Utah.

Gambling Trends:

San Jose State is 3-15 SU in its last 18 games
San Jose State is 1-8-1 ATS in its last 10 games on the road
San Jose State is 0-5 SU in its last 5 games on the road
Utah is 5-0 SU in its last 5 games at home
The total has gone UNDER in 4 of San Jose State’s last 5 games on the road
Utah is 22-3 SU in its last 25 games
The total has gone UNDER in 5 of Utah’s last 7 games at home

San Jose State at Utah pick: Utah -31.5
