Two ACC rivals will go head to head in Week 4 of college football odds when the Florida State Seminoles host the Wake Forest Demon Deacons.
The Seminoles (2-1, 1-1 against the spread) have fallen out of the rankings after getting absolutely whipped by Oklahoma a few weeks ago. They bounced back last week, picking up a 34-10 victory over BYU. Christian Ponder—a supposed Heisman candidate—was god awful against the Sooners, completing just 39 percent of his passes while tossing two picks and getting sacked four times.
Ponder looked much better against the Cougars, playing efficient football—though he was sacked another three times—but it’s clear the coaching staff took the game out of his hands. Instead, they turned to the ground game, which exploded for 278 yards and three scores (Ponder himself added 50 yards and a touchdown).
Defensively, the Noles put things back together. After getting burned for 380 yards and four touchdowns by Oklahoma quarterback Landry Jones, Florida State took out its aggression on the Cougars, racking up eight sacks and two takeaways. FSU showed some weak spots against the run, though, allowing JJ Di Luigi to rush for 93 yards on 18 carries.
Wake Forest (2-1, 1-1 ATS) opened the season with two straight 50-plus-point performances, but it couldn’t keep things rolling in last week’s 68-24 loss to Stanford. Despite the lopsided loss, the Demon Deacons did a great job running the football, cranking out 207 yards and three touchdowns against the Cardinal. Wake Forest is averaging over 280 yards per game on the ground.
On the other side of the ball, the Deacons have issue. They allowed a combined 116 points to Duke and Stanford, and they’ve been stung by both run and pass. Duke and Stanford combined for eight touchdown passes against Wake Forest; the Blue Devils rushed for 129 yards while the Cardinal racked up 303 yards on the ground. It’s hard to fill holes when there are so many.
Wake Forest is dong a phenomenal job running the football, which should keep the ball out of Ponder’s hands for as much as possible. It’ll be enough to grind this game and keep it a little too close for comfort on FSU’s behalf. The Seminoles will win but the Demon Deacons cover.
