UCLA has dropped its first two games, including an embarrassing 35-0 loss to Stanford last week. Clearly, that’s not how the Bruins intended on opening their Pac-10 schedule. The passing game is, quite frankly, a disaster. Kevin Prince and Richard Brehaut combined for an awful afternoon, going a collective 11-21 for 81 yards, two interceptions and three sacks. Their poor effort masked a pretty solid day from the rushing attack; Johnathan Franklin managed 73 yards on 11 carries while freshman Malcolm Jones added 52 yards on seven carries. For the day, UCLA rushed for 152 yards.

Unfortunately, the Bruins were just as susceptible to the run on defense. They allowed 211 yards on the afternoon. Shockingly, that actually brought the team’s average down after two games—the Bruins are allowing 262 rush yards per game so far. Worse yet, UCLA was absolutely awful on third downs. The “D” allowed the Cardinal to convert nine of its 16 third-down attempts.

Houston’s offense continued its impressive roll in a 54-24 rout over UTEP; that gives the Cougars 112 points through their first two games and, not surprisingly, they’ve won both of them. Running back Bryce Beall carried the load, racking up 195 and three touchdowns on just 18 carries. Backup Michael Hayes added 17 carries for 77 yards and three scores of his own.

There is plenty of cause for concern moving forward, though—most notably the injury to quarterback Casey Keenum. Keenum is a Heisman candidate this year but was knocked out of the game in the third quarter, likely with a concussion. He’s listed as day-to-day and his status for this weekend is unknown. Cotton Turner (9-10, 69 yards, touchdown against UTEP) will start is Keenum can’t go.

On the other side of the ball, Houston doesn’t have to be a world beater—it just needs to be respectable. So far, the results are mixed. The Cougars did a nice job snuffing out the run, but the Miners didn’t really stick with the run anyway; they were playing catch up with Houston all night. UTEP quarterback Trevor Vittatoe carved them up, throwing for 340 yards and three touchdowns. Vittatoe was sacked just once and didn’t toss an interception.

Though Turner played well in relief last week, he’s not ready to fill Keenum’s big shoes. That said, the Cougars still have a brilliant running game to rely on with Beall at the helm. Considering how awful the Bruins have been against the run so far this season, it’s hard to imagine them having any luck corralling Beall. Take the Cougars, with or without Keenum.

Gambling Trends:

The total has gone OVER in 6 of Houston’s last 8 games on the road
Houston is 4-11 ATS in its last 15 games on the road
Houston is 13-4 SU in its last 17 games
UCLA is 4-8 SU in its last 12 games
