Mountain West Schools 2010-2011 Football Previews: Utah Utes

Coach: Kyle Whittingham
2009 Record: 10-3

Utah Gambling Odds from Sportsbook.com to win BCS: +10000

Utah is annually one of the big sluggers of the Mountain West conference. The Utes have enjoyed relatively uninterrupted success since 2004, when they went unbeaten. Kyle Whittingham has kept the program moving in the right direction after former coach Urban Meyer bolted to greener pastures in Florida.

In 2010, the Salt Lake City-dwellers must depend on a balanced offensive attack, with so many defensive starters graduating.

Though conference rival TCU is geared up for a BCS-busting season, Utah is still among the class of a strong mid-major conference and if a few players emerge on the defensive side of the ball, the Utes will be as tough a draw as any – BCS conference or not.

Team Strengths:

Utah deploys a deep, talented and multi-faceted rushing attack led by senior Eddie Wide, the best running back in the MWC. Wide’s back-up, senior Matt Asiata, rushed for 350 yards and four scores and quarterback Terrance Cain is also fleet of foot.

The offensive line is also chock full of crafty veterans, led by center Zane Taylor and tackle Caleb Schlauderaff.

The little defensive experience that returns is on the D-line; tackles Sealver Siliga, James Aiono and end Derrick Shelby will be looked to for a spark.

Team Weaknesses:

The defensive back seven is greener than a UCLA freshman on a Frosh Week morning. The only returner is CB Brandon Burton, who was decidedly so-so in 2009. Fans will get to the bottom of Utah’s 2009 defensive depth merely by watching the starters this season.

The WR corps is also depleted, only diminutive senior Jereme Brooks offers significant experience and production (he was the second-leading receiver in ’09).

2010-2011 Utah Football Prediction: 10-3

It’s clear that Utah fans are no stranger to winning, but it just seems that there are too many missing puzzle pieces to have an unbeaten season (or something close to it) in 2010. Granted, the Utes will be in solid shape if the defense jells and a receiver emerges to go with Brooks, but tilts against Pitt, TCU and a road game at Notre Dame loom ominously.

The offense should dummy people, but it would be a surprise to see Utah leapfrog Texas Christian for tops in the conference.

Nice write-up. I like their chances this year and see them as the best potential of knocking off TCU – even more than Oregon State. I think they are underrated this year and could make a serious run that others don’t see coming.
