Some bettors will wonder why it’s even worth discussing a 1-11 football team in 2010 futures betting. But what happens when that team returns a whopping 19 starters? In a Mickey Mouse conference like the MAC, a massive experience advantage could cause a quick turnaround.

Can we expect that from Miami Ohio this year?

Team Strengths:

Zac Dysert is a work in progress at quarterback but I think he’ll be more of a strength than a weakness this year. He knows his role in a run-dominated offense and he’s a dual threat. He accounted for 17 of the team’s 25 touchdowns last season, throwing for 12 and running for five. All five starters return to the offensive line in front of him. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

The Redhawks’ linebacker corps is also decent. Jerrell Wedge was a standout last year, notching 114 tackles and leading the MAC with 18.5 tackles for losses.

Team Weaknesses:

One reason why Miami needs more from Dysert (who threw 16 picks last year) is that the team lacks other major playmakers. Thomas Merriweather is supposed to be a physical running back but he struggles at the goal line. Miami’s main receivers, Jamal Rogers and Armand Robinson, don’t stretch the field enough.

The Redhawks’ secondary got torched regularly last season; has it improved?

Miami (OH) 2010-2011 Football Predictions: 5-7

My earlier projections had Miami climbing near the top of its conference but I’m not as convinced after taking a closer look. Sure, Redhawks’ vast experience should get them into the win column far more often this season, but experience can only take you so far.

This team is short on talent. Even Dysert, their supposed star, wouldn’t sniff a starting job on any of the nation’s top teams.

Expect improved play and reason for excitement in 2011, but 2010 will be more of a development season.
